ARCATA, Calif. – Humboldt State men's soccer wraps up its regular season when it hosts California Collegiate Athletic Association matches against Cal State Los Angeles Thursday at 3 p.m. and Cal State Dominguez Hills Saturday at 2 p.m.
The Lumberjacks enter the weekend with a 4-9-1 record overall and are 2-8 in CCAA play after falling to Sonoma State, 3-0, and Chico State, 4-1, on the road last week.
"We've had a couple of down performances," said head coach
Fred Jungemann. "But if you look at the bigger picture, we're starting six or seven freshman every week in one of the toughest conferences in the country, with by far the most difficult travel schedule in the conference. This young team has learned and grown week by week, and that is a huge positive for the future of the program"
Cal State Los Angeles comes into the week with an 8-4-3 record overall and is 6-4 in the CCAA. Steven Eberle leads the Golden Eagles with six goals and an assist.
"LA is fighting for the last conference tournament spot so I'm sure they're going to come in and work hard for a result," said Jungemann. "They're typically one of the best teams in our conference so it's going to be a very difficult game."
Cal State Dominguez Hills has a record of 9-6-1 overall and is 6-4 in CCAA action. The Toros feature the highest scoring offense in the conference, and they are led by leading scorer Joey Chica who has recorded 12 goals and seven assists.
"They're going to be a very dangerous attacking team," said Jungemann. "They've had a lot of good results this year and are playing very well. Just like Cal State LA, it's going to be a very difficult game."
Saturday's game will also be the final appearance for one Lumberjack student-athlete. Senior
Trice Smith will play his last match for the Green and Gold and will be recognized in a ceremony prior to kickoff.
