ARCATA, Calif. – After going 0-2 last weekend, Lumberjack men's soccer aims to regroup and return to its winning ways with a weekend road trip. Humboldt State faces Stanislaus State (Friday, Sept. 23) and Cal State East Bay (Sunday, Sept. 25).
The Green and Gold may have suffered a setback in regards to point totals last week, but head coach
Fred Jungemann is optimistic about his team's potential.
"I'm sure the team is a little frustrated with the results, but we played well and showed that we can compete with the top teams, not only in the CCAA, but in the country," said Jungemann. "The guys are getting more and more confident in their ability to compete and play. Now we just have to put it all together and start finding ways to win."
HSU's goalkeeping duo performed admirably in losses to Cal State San Bernardino and Cal Poly Pomona. Chris Cherms and
Robert Quintero combined for 18 saves over the weekend, and the pair surrendered just two goals combined.
Jungemann has very clear goals for his squad heading into this weekend's California Collegiate Athletic Association matchups.
"We need to work on creating our chances to score more goals," said Jungemann. "We have only given up four goals in our first six games, so the defense is going very well. Now we have to find ways to get the ball in the net."
The Jacks went a combined 0-3 against Cal State East Bay and Stanislaus State last season. The Warriors are still looking for its first win of 2016 and are 0-3-3 overall, while the Pioneers (3-4, 0-2 CCAA) have surrendered nine goals in their last two matches.
"Both teams are having some good results so far," said Jungemann. "Stanislaus has, from what I understand, mostly a new team. They graduated quite a few players last season, but they are doing well and getting decent results. East Bay lost its coach in the offseason so they're going through some changes as well. But we've seen them play a couple of times, and they looked like a very solid and strong team. It's going to be another tough CCAA weekend against two very good teams."
