Men’s Soccer Kicks Off CCAA Play After Successful Bay Area Trip

FRIDAY VS. EAST BAY: LIVE STATS
SUNDAY VS. MONTEREY BAY: LIVE STATS | LIVE VIDEO

ARCATA, Calif. –
After rolling to a 3-1 start in two tournaments thus far this season, the Humboldt State men's soccer team is gearing up for conference play, as they travel to Cal State East Bay on Friday and then Cal State Monterey Bay on Sunday. Friday's match begins at 7 p.m.

Last season, the Jacks dropped home and away games to the Pioneers and Otters, both by 2-1 finals.

Isaiah Dairo is coming off a strong weekend showing in San Francisco, where the Lumberjacks took on Academy of Art and Holy Names and came away with 1-0 and 2-1 victories, respectively. Dairo had one goal in overtime vs. Academy of Art and one assist. Dairo, Tyler Guptill, Frankie Calderon, and goalkeeper Chris Cherms were named to the 2017 Golden Gate Classic All-Tournament Team for their performances last weekend.

According to Cherms, in past years individuals have tried to "put on the cape" to earn victories themselves, but, "I think that this year especially, we're the closest to being a team that we have been in a few years. No one really takes it upon themselves to win the game; we work as a team and then we get the results. That's how it should be and starting off, we're doing a very good job of that."

Head Coach Fred Jungemann was satisfied with the way his squad has come together thus far in their three-game winning streak.

"It's a good feeling to be where we're at from a standpoint of team spirit and confidence," said Jungemann. "The guys are going into conference play now feeling that they have the ability to get results. We like the way we're performing, scoring some goals and defending well."

The coach said that while he has a relatively young squad, they have done a fine job of "not playing young" and stepping up to the challenge when it is presented to them, respecting the leadership of captains Mumbi Kwesele and Cameron Spencer.

The Pioneers are 2-2-1, losing to Westminster College 3-0 on Sept. 10, and Evan Sanchez leads the team with four goals. The Otters lost 4-0 to Regis University last week and sport a 1-3 overall record in Head Coach Shane Carew's first season.
