Women’s Soccer Falls in First of Two Matches In Vallejo

Box Score VALLEJO, Calif. – Humboldt State's women's soccer team fell to No. 18-ranked NAIA opponent Embry-Riddle University 1-0 on Friday night.

Head Coach Paul Karver estimated that the Lumberjacks had 20-plus shots versus the three of Embry-Riddle, and the Jacks possessed the ball for 65-70 percent of the game. The Eagles managed to slot home a goal late in the first half, and the Jacks were unable to answer.

"The midfield stepped up to the challenge and did a very good job," said Karver. "We absolutely controlled play. They had one opportunity and they capitalized on it, on a counter at the end of the first half. The reality is again, we're playing a very good, very well coached team, with a lot of nice players, and our team did a very good job of making the game difficult for them. We were able to move the ball, we were back to playing the type of soccer we want to play, but tonight we just didn't have the finishing touch."

Karver credited the Eagles' goalkeeper with doing a lot to preserve the shutout, making some special saves, and playing fantastically. He thought that for his squad, Cameron Mejia had a nice game in the midfield offensively, but that much of the credit for the squad's possession went to the back line and goalkeeper Katelin Talbert. He believed his team found success "keeping the game simple, knocking the ball, changing the point of attack, and moving the ball in and out of the midfield to penetrate and find ways to play that have been missing."

Karver said that the team needs to get back to making the most of its goal-scoring opportunities, which the team was doing earlier in the season when it opened its campaign on a three-game winning streak. Goal-scoring will be the focus for the Jacks as they head into another game in Vallejo against Benedictine at Mesa at 11 a.m. on Sunday.
