SALEM, Ore.--- For the second consecutive race,
Rosa Granados captured her second title by placing first in the 5K 46
th Annual Charles Bowles Invitational at Bush's Pasture Park in Salem, Ore. With her first-place finish, Granados paced the Lumberjacks to a sixth-place team finish out of 13 teams.
Carson Smith led the way for HSU men's cross country team with his tenth-place finish in the 8K race. The Lumberjack men finished in third place out of 13 teams and were the top non-Division I team.
QUOTES FROM THE COACH: "Rosa (Granados) getting another win is phenomenal, especially against the competition today," said head coach
Jamey Harris. "It was also great won see that we're closing the gap behind her. Saedy (Williamson) was really good today, it really helped us to have Serena (Smith) today, and Andie (Kolasinski), Melissa (Pinter) and Anabel (Ojeda) were all much better than our last race."
WOMEN'S RACE: Rosa Granados captured the Charles Bowles Invite with her time of 18:11.3 in the 5K race. She finished almost seven seconds ahead of the University of Portland's Elle Eriksen who finished in second with a time of 18:18.1. Finishing behind Granados for the 'Jacks was
Saedy Williamson with her fifth-place time of 18:23. Also figuring into the Lumberjacks' sixth place team finish was
Andie Kolasinski (50
th, 19:42.4),
Serena Smith (56
th, 19:49.5) and
Pearl Burton (62
nd, 19:58.7). Four other 'Jacks ran this morning in
Kayla Penny,
Melissa Pinter,
Anabel Ojeda and
Lucy Atkinson. Penny finished in 66
th place (20:04.1), Pinter in 86
th place (20:32.4), Ojeda in 111
th (21:05.5) and Atkinson (118
th, 21:18.7).
As a team, the Lumberjacks finished in sixth place out of 14 teams as the University of Portland captured the team title with its 56 points followed by George Fox University's 85 points. Rounding out the top five teams were Seattle University (third, 87 points), Oregon State University (123 points) and the University of Hawai'i (126 points). Three other NCAA Division II teams participated in this invite in Point Loma Nazarene (eight place, 238 points), Western New Mexico University (12
th place, 303 points) and Central Washington University (13
th place, 326 points).
QUOTES FROM THE COACH: "Carson (Smith) definitely had a better race this weekend and Kaleb (Traficante) really came through for us today," added Harris. "Ian (Rusk) was solid and Sebastian (Vasset-Fauvel) was beter this week. It was the first race for Jacob (Zerecero) and Ricardo (Torres), and I think we can expect even more out of them going forward. As a team, I think we can and will do better, but I am pretty satisfied with a third place behind two nationally ranked Division I teams."
MEN'S RACE: Carson Smith paced HSU's men with his 10
th place time of 24:59.4 in the 8K race. He was the top non-NCAA Division I place in the invite as the University of Washington had the top five placers followed by a runner from Seattle University and two runners from the University of Portland. Joe Waskomm of the University of Washington won the race with his time of 23:42.9. Smith was a minute behind ninth place finisher Kai Vickers of Portland.
The next Lumberjack runner to cross the finish line was
Ian Rusk with his 25
th place time of 25:43.3 followed by
Sebastian Vaisset-Fauvel's time of 25:44 which placed him in 27
th place.
Kaleb Traficante finished in 34
th place (25:58.6) and
Lucio Rivas ran a 26:00.9 to finish in 37
th place to round out the top 'Jack placers.
Jaxon Leduc finished in 48
th place (26:22.2) and Jacob Zercero ran a 26:30.2 to finish in 52
nd place for Humboldt State while
Michael Gengo (67
th, 26:49.9,
Mica Mills (93
rd, 27:32.5) and
Ricardo Torres (DNF) also ran for the 'Jacks.
The University of Washington capture the team title with 15 points followed by the University of Portland with 74 points and the 'Jacks with 133 points. Rounding out the top five were Seattle University (134 points) and George Fox University (139 points).
UP NEXT: Humboldt State will return to the course a week from today in Romeoville, Illinois, when the Lumberjacks participate in the Lewis Conference Crossover on the campus of Lewis University. HSU will have more invitational to participate in after this in the Bronco Invitational on October 16 prior to the 2021 CCAA Championships on October 23 in San Marcos, Calif.
