MONMOUTH, Ore.--- The duo of
Rosa Granados and
Elliott Portillo led the way for the Humboldt State women's and men's cross country teams at the rainy and windy 2021 NCAA Division II West Regional Championships at Ash Creek Preserve on the campus of Western Oregon University. Granados ran a 22:23.5 to finish in 30
th place in the 6K race while Portillo ran a 32:12.8 to finish in 48
th place in the 10K race. As a team, the Lumberjack women finished in 15
th place while the men finished in 17
th place
GRANADOS LEADS THE WAY: Rosa Granados ran a 22:23.5 to finish in 30
th place to lead the way for the 'Jacks. She just missed making All-Region as the top 25 finishers earn that honor. The 25
th place finisher ran a 22:11.3.
Finishing behind Granados was
Saedy Williamson with her 35
th place time of 22:26.7. The next 'Jack runner to cross the finish line was
Serena Smith (124th, 24:28.7) followed by
Kayla Penny (131
st, 24:50.1) and
Andie Kolasinski (138
th, 25:11.0). Also running today for the Lumberjacks were
Anabel Ojeda (156
th, 26:01) and
Melissa Pinter (157
th, 26:04.5).
Stanislaus State's Kaela Dishon won the regionals with her time of 21:14.4. Also qualifying for nationals were Academy of Art's Natalia Novak (third, 21:27.1) and Alaska Fairbanks' Rosie Fordham (fourth, 21:34.4) and Kendall Kramer (fifth, 21:36.1).
15TH PLACE: As a team, the Lumberjacks finished in 15
th place out of 24 teams with 412 points. Simon Fraser captured the West Regionals with 75 points followed by Stanislaus State (91 points) and Chico State (110 points). The top three teams will advance to the 2021 NCAA Division II National Championships in two weeks in Tampa, Fla. Also qualifying for the nationals are the top two individuals that are not a part of a qualifying team. The invited field for the 2021 NCAA Championships will be announced in a press release on NCAA.com on Monday, November 8 no later than 2pm (Pacific).
PORTILLO LEADS THE WAY FOR HSU: Elliott Portillo ran a 32:12.8 to finish in 48
th place in the 10K race.
Carson Smith was the next 'Jack runner to cross the finish line with his 76
th place time of 32:45.9 followed by
Ian Rusk (99
th, 33:29.2) and
Lucio Rivas (113
th, 34:06.3) and
Kaleb Traficante (115
th, 34:16).
Jaxon Leduc finished in 122
nd place (34:44.4) and
Mica Mills was 131
st with a time of 35:36.8.
Fresno Pacific's Patrick Kiprop won the regionals with his time of 30:12.6. Cal State San Marcos' Shea Vavra finished in second place with a time of 30:55.2. Also qualifying for nationals were Azusa Pacific's Joshua Velasco (fourth, 30:55.9) and Alaska Anchorage's Cole Nash (fifth, 30:56.3).
17th PLACE: Humboldt State men's team finished in 17
th place out of 21 teams with 428 points. Capturing the team title was Chico State with 47 points followed by Fresno Pacific in second place with 109 points and Cal Poly Pomona (third, 138 points). The top three teams will advance to the 2021 NCAA Division II National Championships in two weeks in Tampa, Fla. Also qualifying for the nationals are the top two individuals that are not a part of a qualifying team.
