Draw With Cougars Keeps Jacks Playoff Hopes Alive

SAN MARCOS, Calif.--- Despite an early first period goal by Kylea Becker, the Cal Poly Humboldt Lumberjacks gave up an equalizer early in the second half, as the Jacks were forced into a stalemate against the Cougars of Cal State San Marcos on Sunday afternoon at The Cage in San Marcos. Kelsey Bess, Emilie Wallin, Megan Janikowski and Frida Duran Arellano all had shot attempts on the day for Humboldt as well. Carson Thomson-Terrel recorded three saves.

Statistically, both teams were fairly even. Humboldt carried a slight advantage in shot attempts, 12-10, while San Marcos had more corner kicks, 4-2. The Cougars also out-fouled the Jacks 16-8 in a game that saw five total yellow cards and one ejection.

With today's draw, the Jacks scored one point to help keep them in contention for one of the six available CCAA Playoff positions which will be awarded following the end of the regular season on Thursday, Oct. 27. With three games remaining in the regular season, the Jacks currently sit tied for eighth in the conference standings with Cal State Monterey Bay, only three points behind sixth place Cal Poly Pomona. Humboldt will have the added benefit of being able to finish the regular season at College Creek Field. The Jacks are currently the only team in the conference yet to be beaten at home. They will be tested by Cal State Monterey Bay, Cal State Dominguez Hills and third place Chico State to finish off the season.

Humboldt (5-4-5, 2-2-4 CCAA) will begin its final homestand of the regular season on Friday, Oct. 21, when they face off against Cal State Monterey Bay (6-6-3, 3-4-1) at 12:30pm at College Creek Field.
