GOLD RIVER, Calif.---   The Cal Poly Humboldt Lumberjacks Varsity 8+ and Varsity 4+, nationally ranked 8th, advanced to the Grand Finals of the 2022 WIRA Championships tomorrow morning at Lake Natoma in Gold River, Calif.  The Jacks' Varsity 8+ captured their heat this morning while the Varsity 4+ placed second.  This afternoon, the Jacks' Novice 4+ captured the Petite Final after finishing third in their heat this morning.
 
"We had a very good first day at the WIRA as the varsity eight  won their heat and puts them lane one of the Grand Final tomorrow morning," said head coach Matt Weise.  If you take a look at times, it we will be a very tight exciting race with Western Washington and Seattle Pacific. The varsity four placed second in their heat which also puts them in the Grand Final tomorrow.  It will be a very good race between the team, Western Washington and Oregon."
 
In the varsity eight, the Jacks had a first-place time of 7:03.261 followed by UC Irvine in second in 7:11.253 in the heat.  Humboldt's varsity four finished in second with a time of 8:21.698 in its heat to advance to the Grand Final. Conference rival Seattle Pacific won the heat with a time of 8:09.732.  
 
"The novice four just missed qualifying for the Grand Final this morning and came back and won the Petite Final this afternoon," added Weise.  "They really raced well this afternoon and overall we had a very good first day and we are excited about tomorrow and looking forward to see how we can compete."
 
In the morning heat the Jacks' novice four finished in third place with a time of 8:28.661 behind U of Oregon (first, 8:22.521) and Seattle Pacific (second, 8:27.01).  Humboldt captured the Petite Final racing into a headwind, with a time of 9:38.487 almost twenty seconds ahead of second place Orange Coast College.
 
The Jacks' eight will race at 8:40am in the Grand Final.  Humboldt's four will race at 10:50am in it's Grand Final
