ARCATA, Calif. -- A packed College Creek Field on Sunday saw the Cal Poly Humboldt women's soccer team pick up their first California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) win over the Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes (Yotes) with a final score of 3-1.
Frida Duran Arellano scored twice, which included the game winner in the 84
th minute.
Emilia Long also scored in the final seconds to seal the victory and pick up her sixth goal of the season, making her tied for the most goals scored across the CCAA. The No. 21 ranked Lumberjacks now hold a record of 7-1-1 overall and 1-1 record in league play.
The Yotes came out of the gate strong, as they forced a corner kick just 31 seconds into the match. Both teams were battling in the beginning stages of the match and both goalies tallied a save within the first 11 minutes. In the 30
th minute,
Emilia Long pushed up the right flank and sent the ball over to
Frida Duran Arellano, where she wrapped it left just out of the goalie's reach to put the Jacks up 1-0. Humboldt went into the half up 1-0 and out shot CSUSB 5-4. The Yotes did however have four corners compared the Jacks' zero.
In the 57
th minute,
Kylea Becker shot a ball on target to the bottom right corner that was saved by the San Bernardino goalie. The Yotes grabbed some offensive momentum after they had three corner kicks but nothing to show for it. Trying to slow the Coyote attack,
Emilia Long put a shot that went off the top woodwork at the 62:32 mark that was inches away from extending the Humboldt lead. Nathaly Losada Lucumi of CSUSB evened the match within the next minute (62:43) on an assist from Kaylen Gonzalez to make it a 1-1 score.
At the 83:40 mark,
Emma McChristie sent a corner kick into the box that
Kylea Becker headed to
Frida Duran Arellano for a highlight reel goal, putting Humboldt up 2-1 with five minutes remaining. Feeling the pressure, the Yotes had almost everyone on the attack in the final minute.
Grace Johnson was able to clear the ball up field to
Emilia Long, where she had a breakaway opportunity. As the goalie came out to try and beat Long to the ball, Long sent it past the goalie from long range to score her CCAA leading sixth goal and put the Jacks up 3-1 with eight seconds left. Humboldt secured their first conference win and bounced back from Friday's loss with over 400 fans in attendance.
With it being Youth Soccer Day, Humboldt gave out schedule posters and held an autograph session with local clubs after the match.
