SAN FRANCISCO -- Cal Poly Humboldt women's soccer took on the San Francisco State University Gators (SFSU) on Friday from a very hot Cox Stadium in San Francisco. The 'Jacks powered past the Gators with a final score of 2-0, improving to 2-1 in CCAA play and 8-1-1 overall.
Brooke Weese and
Frida Duran Arellano each scored goals, and
Carson Thomson-Terrel had four saves to complete her sixth shutout of the season.
"This was a great team win today," stated head coach
Grant Landy. "We got production from each and every player. This was a very important win for us in very challenging conditions on the road. We hope to carry that momentum over to Sunday's game."
A well rounded performance on Friday stemmed from the Lumberjacks dominating the time of possession against the Gators. In the first half, Humboldt out shot SFSU 6-4 and recorded three shots on goal.
Kylea Becker and
Frida Duran Arellano pressured the Gator defense but were both unable to convert on their shots early on. SFSU posted two quick back-to-back shots that were saved by
Carson Thomson-Terrel. Because of the extreme Bay Area heat, a rehydration timeout was put in place and a wave of subs came in for the 'Jacks. In the 34th minute,
Annie Hoffman found
Morgan Young who played the ball perfectly to
Brooke Weese that resulted in a Humboldt goal, putting the 'Jacks up 1-0. This was Weese's second goal of the season.
Simone Tafoya threatened to add to the score, as she posted two shots before the half but was unsuccessful in finding the back of the net. At the half, the 'Jacks led the Gators 1-0.
Nine minutes into the second half,
Emma McChristie pushed the ball up field to
Emilia Long. With two defenders on her, Long found
Frida Duran Arellano who turned and struck the ball for her sixth goal of the season, putting Humboldt up 2-0 in the 54th minute. As the match progressed, Becker and Tafoya added a total of three shots and goalkeeper Thomson-Terrel kept the Gators from scoring despite two more shots on goal. The 'Jacks ended the hot day victorious over SFSU with a final score of 2-0.
