SEASIDE, Calif. -- Cal Poly Humboldt women's soccer picked up three points on the road against Cal State Monterey Bay (CSUMB) on Sunday afternoon when the 'Jacks defeated the Otters 1-0 in full time.
Abby Borg came up clutch in the 83rd minute when she tapped a deflected ball into the back of the net for the game winner to give Humboldt their third straight CCAA win. The 'Jacks improve to 9-1-1 overall and jump into second place in the standings with a 3-1 CCAA record.
"This was a challenging game for our team today," said head coach
Grant Landy. "I give a lot of credit to Monterey, they made it difficult for us to break through and were very organized defensively. On the flip side, we made some second half adjustments and we started to create some really good chances going forward. The team kept pushing and believing in each other. To get two wins on the road this weekend was huge for us. I am very proud of this team and I hope we can keep this momentum going into next week."
The 'Jacks pressured the Otters early on when
Emma McChristie and
Emilia Long both had shots on goal within the first 20 minutes of play. The Humboldt back line proved to be strong as they allowed only one Otter shot through the first 45 minutes of play. As the first half progressed, seven different Lumberjacks took a shot, but the Monterey Bay defenders and goalkeeper made it tough for Humboldt to convert successfully. The first half ended with a 0-0 tie and Humboldt held the advantage in shots (7-1) and corner kicks (4-1).
The second half continued with the Lumberjacks pressuring the Otters from the start. Five Humboldt shots came in the first 15 minutes of the second half. Monterey Bay had an opportunity to score in the 62nd minute as Natalie Leroux put a shot on goal that was saved by keeper
Carson Thomson-Terrel.
What looked to be draw, became a win for the 'Jacks when a corner kick in the 84th minute was awarded to Humboldt.
Kylea Becker put the corner perfectly into the box that
Megan Janikowski headed towards the goal.
Frida Duran Arellano chested the ball down that was deflected by the goalie, and defender
Abby Borg placed the ball in the bottom right corner for her first goal of the season, putting the 'Jacks up 1-0 with six minutes of time remaining. Humboldt held off any Otter threats and walked away with a 1-0 win and their third straight CCAA victory.
