ARCATA, Calif. -- Cal Poly Humboldt Women's Soccer returned to College Creek Field on Thursday afternoon for their first match on domestic turf since returning from Australia just over a week ago. The Lumberjacks took on the Raiders of Southern Oregon University and continued their offensive showcase with a 2-0 victory.
The beginning of the match started with the Raiders on the attack early, as they had three shots compared to Humboldt's one. In the 36th minute, the momentum shifted when freshman
Simone Tafoya scored on an assist from the junior transfer,
Emilia Long. At the half, the 'Jacks led 1-0.
"We started slow and a little bit on the back foot," said head coach
Grant Landy. "We definitely grew into the game nicely and the start of the second half you could tell there was just more intent and more focus."
The second half was controlled by Humboldt from the start of the whistle. In the 65th minute,
Emilia Long assisted once again but this time on a goal scored by returning CCAA Honorable Mention,
Frida Duran Arellano.
"It's pretty exciting because I have been out for awhile," stated
Frida Duran Arellano. "Being here at home and scoring my first goal was pretty exciting. I want to keep them coming."
Despite many substitutions (as expected) throughout the exhibition, Humboldt outshot Southern Oregon in the end 18-6 and the combination of
Carson Thomson-Terrel and
Ryanne Chapman in goal posted a clean sheet for the 'Jacks.
When asked what he looks to get out of the final two exhibitions, Landy responded, "Rotate a lot of players, looking for good combinations and where people fit in different systems. Exhibitions for us are about trying people in different spots because we have two more games and then we got games that count. The results are great, but it's about finding the right combinations of players and where to play them, which takes time. Also, creating a foundation for how we want to play and the intensity and focus that we have when the game starts."
Humboldt returns to action this Saturday for another home exhibition match against Folsom Lake College at 11 a.m.
