ARCATA, Calif. -- Cal Poly Humboldt women's soccer hosted the Penguins of Dominican University for a non-conference matchup on Thursday afternoon from College Creek Field to kickoff a seven game home stand. The Jacks took care of business in a very physical match and defeated the Penguins with a final score of 2-1.
Emma McChristie and
Frida Duran Arellano each scored a goal in the match to help Humboldt improve to 3-0 overall.
"Dominican has been a hard competitor for us over the years," said head coach
Grant Landy. "It feels good that we got this result. We are learning some hard lessons about this game but I give our team a lot of credit for fighting through adversity and fiinding a way to get the game winning goal."
Match Summary
The 'Jacks controlled the possession early and were able to get on the scoreboard first when Emma McChriste scored on an
Emilia Long assist in the 24
th minute. With one minute left to go in the first half, the Penguins worked their way into Humboldt territory and Miranda Gregory scored the equalizer for Dominican, evening the score at 1-1. Desite heading into the half tied, Humboldt out shot Dominican 8-3.
The second half began with both teams getting looks and trading chances. In the 80
th minute,
Grace Johnson headed the ball the
Emilia Long, who then sent it through to
Frida Duran Arellano. Arellano raced into the box and placed the ball just inside the far post for a goal, which resulted in being the game winner after Humboldt held off the final efforts from Dominican and won with a final score of 2-1.
