Jacks' track hosts meets Friday and Saturday

ARCATA — Once is not enough, so Humboldt State's track and field teams will host two meets instead Friday and Saturday in Redwood Bowl.

Scheduled for Friday is the Humboldt Invitational Twilight Relay and Open competition, with several local high school squads lining up with other participating community members.  Events begin at 4 p.m. with the boys' shot put, with the final competition the boys' super sprint medley at 8:15 p.m.

Already entered are athletes from Fortuna, South Fork and McKinleyville, with more teams expected to join them. Highlighting the evening should be the women/girls mile run at 6 p.m., followed by the men/boys mile at 6:15 p.m.

On Saturday, the Lumberjacks will compete for the only time this season on their home track. They'll be joined by athletes representing San Francisco State, Sonoma State and College of the Redwoods, among others.

Field events begin with the women's shot put at 9 a.m. on the upper field behind Redwood Bowl. Racing on the track starts at 11 a.m. with the women's 3,000 meter steeplechase.

Humboldt State is coming off back-to-back strong performances to open the spring. After opening the season on February on Feb. 26 at the Wildcat Relays, the Jacks showed marked improvement in nearly every event at last week's CSU Stanislaus Preview Meet.

Highlights for the Lumberjacks in their first two meets include Irene Graham's winning performance in the women's 5,000 meters, and Nico Arguelles' clocking of 1 minute, 54.58 seconds in the men's 800 meters.

First-year head coach Scott Pesch and graduate assistant Dan Noel direct the Lumberjacks, who have eight more weekends of competition before the season culminates at the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championships, set for May 5-7 in Turlock.
