Sunday, the Humboldt State women's soccer team will head to the Bay Area for its final roadtrip of the season. First up the Jacks will face San Francisco State
Friday at 3 p.m. The Jacks then head down to Seaside to face Cal State Monterey Bay at 11:30 a.m.
Sunday.
Head-to-Head: After beating San Francisco State, 2-1 on Sept. 21, the Jacks improved their all-time record against the Gators to 8-5-3. ...With their 2-0 win over Cal State Monterey Bay Sept. 19, the Jacks improved their all-time record against the Otters to 5-1-0.
Cumbo's Comments: “Despite our loss
Sunday, spirits are high,” said Humboldt State head women's soccer coach Andy Cumbo. “Our quality of play has gotten better lately with our offense getting back to generating opportunities. We want as strong of a finish as possible.”
Lumberjacks Notes: Sunday's loss to Sonoma State puts the Jacks record at 8-7-1 overall and they are third in the CCAA's North Division with a 4-5-1 record. The Jacks are nine points behind Sonoma State and 12 behind division leader San Francisco State. However, HSU has two games in hand with San Francisco State finishing its regular season this weekend. ...Winning away from Redwood Bowl has been a problem this season for the Jacks, who've earned just one win in six opportunities, going 1-4-1 on the road. ...According to Cumbo, the Jacks' recent performances can be attributed to forward
Kim Carroll and midfielder
Katie Forba recovering from injuries that hampered them earlier this season. Carroll is second on the team with three goals and nine points while Forba leads the Jacks with four assists on the season, which places her in a tie for 10th in the CCAA. ...
Allison Lawrence, possibly HSU's most consistent player this season according to Cumbo, continues to lead the Jacks offensively, scoring seven goals, tying her for sixth in the CCAA. She also ranks eighth with 15 points.
Opponents' Notes: The North Division leading San Francisco State Gators enter
Friday's contest against Humboldt State are
10-6-2 overlal and 8-3-1 in the CCAA, having won seven of their past eight games. Despite having the second best record in the conference, the Gators were ranked No. 5 in last week's National Soccer Coaches Association of America West Region poll. They are also rank No. 4 in the NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Committee West Region poll. ...The Gators feature one of the CCAA's best defenses, allowing only 13 goals in 18 games and leading the CCAA with 10 shutouts. Goalkeepers Emily Hart and Rachel Lauderdale are ranked second and fourth in the CCAA in goals against average, respectively. Hart sports a .58 goals against average and leads the CCAA with a .898 goals against average. Along with her .81 goals against average, Lauderdale is ranked sixth with a .810 goals against average. Both are tied for fifth with four individual shutouts while combining for two others. ...Offensively, the Gators are led by midfielder Robin Bowman, who is tied for second in the conference with nine goals and third with 20 points. Fellow midfielder Sarah Whelan leads the Gators with four assists, which also puts her in a tie four 10th in the CCAA. ...Cal State Monterey Bay enters its game
Friday against Sonoma State in the midst of a nine-game losing streak. The Otters last win came Sept. 24 against Academy of Art. The Otters stand 1-16-1 overall and are a CCAA-worst 0-12-0. ...Despite their struggles this season, the Otters hung with the Jacks in their 2-0 loss on Sept. 19. Humboldt State outshot CSUMB 18-12, and the Otters kept things close for much of the game, with the game remaining scoreless until the final 30 minutes. ...For the season, the Otters have been outscored by their opponents 44-10 and have been shut out five times time their current losing streak. …Goalkeepers Stephanie Husted and Megan Kwasnicki have filled in for regular Gracile Holguin after she left the game injured against Humboldt State Sept. 19. Husted has seen the majority of the action, recording a 2.00 goals against average and 29 saves in just over 670 minutes. Kwasnicki has recorded a 2.58 goals against average in six appearances. ...Offensively, junior midfielder Alyssa Matheson leads the Otters with four goals and 10 points. She is also tied with Krysta Vukas with two assists this season.
