SAN FRANCISCO – Living up to its ranking of one of the conference's top defenses, San Francisco State defeated Humboldt State 2-0 in California Collegiate Athletic Association women's soccer action
Friday.
With the loss, the Jacks drop to 8-8-1 overall and 4-6-1 in the CCAA while the Gators, who were ranked No. 5 in this week's NCAA West Region poll, improve to
11-6-2 overall and stay atop the CCAA's North Division with a 9-3-1 record.
“The girls gave it everything that had
today,” said Humboldt State head women's soccer coach Andy Cumbo. “We treated it like a playoff game and threw everything at them but just couldn't break through.”
The game remained scoreless until three minutes before the half when Morgan Davison converted a penalty kick past HSU goalkeeper
Kelly Sandberg after Jacks defender
Megan Kobler was called for a hand ball in the box.
San Francisco State doubled its lead less-than five minutes into the second half when Sarah Whelan scored on a corner kick, beating Sandberg, who misjudged the ball.
Both Sandberg, who came up big for the Jacks several times in the first half, and SFSU keeper Emily Hart finished the game with six saves.
“We had two unfortunate goals we couldn't do anything about go against us
today and that was the difference,” said Cumbo.
The Jacks will look to close their 2008 finale on the road on a high note
Sunday against Cal State Monterey Bay. Kickoff in Seaside is scheduled for 11:30 a.m.
