Jacks come back for final two games

ARCATA – After yet another up-and-down roadtrip, the Humboldt State men's soccer team returns home for its final two games of the 2008 season. Friday the Jacks face Chico State Friday at 4:30 p.m. Sunday they wrap up their season against Cal State Stanislaus at 2 p.m. in Redwood Bowl.

Head-to-Head: After Chico State's 2-0 victory against HSU Sept. 14, the Jacks' all-time record against the Wildcats now stands at 13-37-6. ...Coming into the first meeting of the season between the two schools, Humboldt State holds a 26-15-1 all-time record against CSU Stanislaus after the Warriors picked up a pair of victories last season.

Cumbo's Comments: “We are definitely confident going into the game Friday against Chico, so if we limit our defensive mistakes we should do well,” said Humboldt State head men's soccer coach Andy Cumbo. “Stanislaus will come ready to battle and considering they have lost a lot of close games, we can't take them lightly.”

Lumberjacks Notes: After ending their three-game losing streak in a 3-2 win against Cal State Monterey Bay Sunday, the Jacks record stands at 8-6-4 overall and 3-6-3 in CCAA play, which places them in a tie for fourth with Cal State Monterey Bay with 12 points. ...The biggest news besides the 3-2 victory Sunday, was the return to the starting lineup of midfielder Tony Ramirez, who hadn't started in six weeks due to a leg injury. ...With his goal Sunday, forward Matt Colwell took over as the team's leading goal scorer, registering his sixth goal of the season. The Arcata native also leads the Jacks with 17 points, ranking him eighth in the CCAA, and is tied with fellow forward Roland Demombynes with five assists, putting both of them eighth in the conference. ...Midfielder Josh Suggs continues to rank amongst the CCAA's top shooters, ranking second in shots (56) and third in shots per game (3.11). ...Defender Russell Vernon, who scored HSU's second goal Sunday against CSUMB, will miss Friday's game due to his red card against the Otters. ...Goalkeeper Drew Ryan will enter the final weekend of the 2008 season and his HSU career with a 1.35 goals against average. Ryan leads the CCAA in saves (92) and saves per game (5.41) and is ranked seventh with four shutouts. For his career, Ryan has recorded a 1.26 goals against average and 14 shutouts, both third all-time in HSU history, a .787 save percentage and 258 saves. The senior from Carmichael will be the lone player honored Sunday against Cal State Stanislaus. “Drew has been a great leader and role model for us his entire career. He has flourished in a lot of different ways since he got here and it's great that he is having his best season this year,” said Cumbo.

Opponent's Notes: Chico State enters its contest against Humboldt State 12-4-0 overall and 8-4-0 in CCAA play after defeating Cal State Stanislaus 1-0 last Friday. The Wildcats are currently in second place in the CCAA's North Division and currently hold the last spot to qualify for the conference's postseason tournament. ...The Wildcats were ranked No. 5 in last week's National Soccer Coaches Association of America West Region poll. ...Defense has been a key to Chico's success this year, allowing only 12 goals in 16 games this season. Goalkeeper Michael Keohane has played all but 45 minutes this season, recording a .68 goals against average, which puts him fourth in the CCAA. He is also ranked third in the conference with seven shutouts and fifth with a .807 save percentage. ...Offensively, the Wildcats are led by midfielder/forward Zac Crim, who is ranked second in the CCAA with nine goals, an is the conference leader with five game-winners. He ranks third in league with 23 points. Fellow midfielder/forward Evan Armstrong is just behind Crim, scoring six goals and totaling 17 points. ...Junior midfielder Kyle Crain leads the Wildcats with six assists this season, ranking him in a tie for fifth in the CCAA. ...Cal State Stanislaus enters the week 3-11-1 overall and 2-10-0 in the CCAA, which places the Warriors at the bottom of the CCAA's North Division. The Warriors have yet to win on the road this season, going 0-5-1. ...The Warriors have been outscored by their opponents, 32-17, with eight of their 11 losses by one goal. Goalkeeper Javier Rosales has played every minute in goal for Stanislaus this season, recording a 2.07 goals against average and ranks third in the CCAA with 74 saves. ...Offensively, the Warriors are led by midfielder Matthew Johnson, who has scored five goals and leads the team with five assists and 14 points, also ranking fourth in the CCAA with 49 shots. Fellow midfielder Andrew Ruiz  leads the team with six goals and is just behind Johnson with 13 points.
