Humboldt hopes to finish strong at home

ARCATA – After a disappointing final roadtrip of the season, the Humboldt State women's soccer team will look to finish the season above the .500 mark. Friday the Jacks host Chico State at 7 p.m. in Redwood Bowl. Sunday the Jacks close their 2008 season against Cal State Stanislaus at 11:30 a.m.

Head-to-Head: After the 0-0 tie on Sept. 14, Chico State still leads the all-time series with HSU 6-8-3. ...Coming into the first meeting of the season against Cal State Stanislaus, Humboldt State are 3-4-0, with the Warriors winning both games last season.

Cumbo's Comments: “Chico is obviously one of our biggest rivals and I feel like we are emotionally ready to face them,” Humboldt State head women's soccer coach Andy Cumbo said. “Recently, a lot of our mistakes have been coming in the back, so if we limit them, we'll do fine this weekend.”

Lumberjacks Notes: The Jacks enter the final weekend of the regular season 8-9-1 overall and 4-7-1 in the CCAA, which places them fourth in the conference's North Division. ...HSU will be hoping that its home field advantage continues this weekend. The Jacks currently have a 7-2-0 record inside Redwood Bowl. ...Defenders Kelsey Gomula and Sarah Ingram, midfielders Erin Ashdown, Kayla Welbanks and Meghan Connolly, and goalkeeper Allyson Riggs will all be honored prior to Sunday's game against Cal State Stanislaus as part of Senior Day ceremonies. ...Forward Allison Lawrence continues to pace the Jacks offensively, scoring seven goals and totaling 15 points, ranking her sixth and 10th in the CCAA, respectively. ...Forward Kim Carroll, who has scored three goals and tallied three assists this season, will miss Friday's game against Chico State due to her red card against Cal State Monterey Bay Sunday. …Midfielder Katie Forba leads the team with four assists on the season. ...Sophomore goalkeeper Kelly Sandberg enters the final week of the season leading the CCAA in saves (94) and saves per game (5.22), ranking sixth with a .810 save percentage, eighth with a 1.19 goals against average and fourth with five shutouts.

Opponent's Notes: Chico State enters Friday's game 7-9-2 overall and 3-7-2 in the CCAA, which places the Wildcats in fourth place in the CCAA's North Division with 11 points, two behind Humboldt State. The Wildcats have struggled lately, losing five of their last six games. ...Winning on the road has been a problem for Chico State this season, going 1-5 away from home. ...Offensively, forward Melissa Lindsay, who is ranked 10th in the CCAA with six goals this season, leads the Wildcats. She is also second on the team with three assists this season. ...Five players are tied for second on the team with six points apiece, among the group is midfielder Kelsey Ikemoto, who leads the team with four assists this season. ...In goal, Natalie Bensky and Lauren Vance have shared the starting duties of late. On the season, Bensky, who has played the majority of the minutes this season, has recorded a 1.51 goals against average and is tied for eighth in the conference with 42 saves. Vance, who has played in eight games this season, has recorded a 1.16 goals against average with 12 saves. ...Cal State Stanislaus enters the week 8-5-4 overall and 4-5-3 in the CCAA, placing the Warriors third in the North Division with 15 points, two points ahead of Humboldt State. ...The Warriors feature one of the CCAA's best defenses, allowing just over one goal a game. Goalkeeper Jessica Sitarz ranks fifth in the conference with a .87 goals against average, third with a .824 save percentage and fourth with 70 saves. ...Offensively, the Warriors have outscored their opponents 40-18 this season. The Warriors' attack is led by forward Marissa Dunaway, who has scored seven goals and 18 points this season, which places her in a tie for sixth in both categories. ...Midfielders Adrienne Sorenson and Rachel Mathews lead the Warriors with five assists this season, which places them in a tie for sixth in the CCAA.
