ARCATA - For the second time this season Humboldt State and Chico State played to a scoreless tie, neither team able to break through in a California Collegiate Athletic Association women's soccer game played
Friday.
The Jacks now move to 8-9-2 overall and 4-7-2 in CCAA action while the Wildcats move to 7-9-3 overall and 3-7-3 in CCAA.
“It's a frustrating result, but a positive one at the same time,” said Humboldt State head women's soccer coach Andy Cumbo. “We put ourselves in a chance to win
tonight but just couldn't put it away.”
Unlike in the first meeting that opened the CCAA season, the Jacks had many more opportunities to score, outshooting Chico State 15-11. Juniors
Katie Forba and
Allison Lawrence constantly put pressure on the Wildcats' defense, recording four and three shots, respectively.
On numerous occasions HSU had chances right in front of Chico State goalkeeper Natalie Benskey's net, but nothing come of it. Benskey finished the game with five saves while HSU keeper
Kelly Sandberg finished with six, including one crucial save to keep the game alive in the first overtime period.
“This game is all about creating chances,” said Cumbo. “However, sometimes nothing will come and that's what happened
tonight.”
Humboldt State will close out its 2008 season
Sunday at 11:30 p.m. against Cal State University Stanislaus. Prior to the game, this season's six seniors,
Kelsey Gomula,
Meghan Connolly,
Kayla Welbanks,
Erin Ashdown,
Sarah Ingram and
Allyson Riggs, will be honored as part of Senior Day ceremonies.
