BELMONT – The Humboldt State men's soccer team earned a physical 0-0 draw in its season-opener against Notre Dame de Namur on Sunday.
“It was a very physical game, but it's a positive result on the road to open the season,” head men's soccer coach Andy Cumbo said. “It's a positive step for us.”
Play was physical throughout, with the Jacks committing 17 fouls and the Argonauts committing seven. The game also saw five yellow cards handed out, with HSU receiving three of them.
The Jacks' defense began shaky, but righted the ship as the game went on. HSU keeper
Drew Ryan finished the game with nine saves, but only a few shots tested the senior captain.
“Drew was very solid in goal for us today,” said Cumbo. “The team got better as the game went on and worked hard at the end of the game.”
HSU managed a few opportunities to score, but only managed to get two of its 12 shots on net in the game.
The Jacks open their 2008 home campaign on Friday, facing off against Oregon Tech at 6 p.m. in the Redwood Bowl.
