LACEY, Wash. – Despite a less-than stellar first half, the Humboldt State men's soccer team claimed a 2-1 victory over Saint Martin's University Friday.
With the win, the Jacks remain unbeaten at 3-0-1 while the Saints fall to 0-5.
“It wasn't a strong performance in the first half by any means,” said Humboldt State head men's soccer coach Andy Cumbo.
The Jacks opened the scoring in the 35th minute when
Roland Demombynes dribbled past two Saints' defenders and beat the onrushing goalkeeper.
Six minutes later the Saints answered when the ball took a deflection off of HSU keeper
Drew Ryan and Austin Kelley put the ball away.
Demombynes was involved in the second goal as well, this time serving up a cross to
Matt Colwell, who headed the ball into the back of the net for his third goal of the season.
“We made some adjustments at the half and they obviously paid off for us,” said Cumbo. “I'm pleased with how we have been taking advantage lately.”
The Jacks will be back in action on Sunday, when they begin California Collegiate Athletic Association play against No. 20 nationally ranked Chico State at 2 p.m.
