Jacks back in the bowl for two games

ARCATA – The Humboldt State women's soccer team returns home to open its 2008 California Collegiate Athletic Association campaign against two northern division rivals. Cal State Monterey Bay comes to Redwood Bowl Friday with kickoff scheduled for 4:30 p.m. The Jacks will then face San Francisco State Sunday at 11:30 a.m.
 
Head-to-Head: Humboldt State holds a 4-1 all-time record against Cal State Monterey Bay, with the two teams splitting a pair of games last season. ...The Jacks hold a 7-5-3 all-time record against San Francisco State, with the Gators winning 4-3 and the two teams playing to a scoreless draw last season.
 
Cumbo's Comments: “We are getting better with every game that we play,” said Humboldt State head women's soccer coach Andy Cumbo. “We are playing with a lot of confidence right now and will be looking to get all six points against two quality sides this weekend.”
 
Lumberjacks Notes: The Jacks entered Sunday's game against Chico State on a four-game winning streak after defeated St. Martin's 3-1. The Jacks answered the call against the Wildcats, earning a very encouraging 0-0 draw in double overtime. The Jacks currently stand 4-2-1 and 0-0-1 in the CCAA. ...The Jacks are paced offensively by forward Allison Lawrence, a junior from San Diego, who has scored three goals and totaled seven points, good for first and third place ties among CCAA leaders, respectively. ...Forward Kim Carroll, a sophomore from Santa Rosa, is not far behind Lawrence for the team lead in goals, scoring two goals and adding one assist. ...Midfielders Sarah Nakamoto, a freshman from Santa Clara, and Katie Forba, a junior from Helena, Mont., are tied for the team lead with two assists and are amongst a laundry list of players tied for sixth in the CCAA. ...In goal, Kelly Sandberg has continued to impress in the early going of 2008, recording a .55 goals against average, good for fourth in the CCAA, and accumulating 39 saves and three shutouts, both good for second in the conference.
 
Opponent's Notes: Cal State Monterey Bay comes into Friday's game with a 0-5-1 record overall and 0-2 in the CCAA. The Otters dropped both games last weekend, losing 3-0 and 2-1 to Cal State Dominguez Hills and UC San Diego, respectively. One of the main problems for the Otters so far this season is keeping and putting the ball into the net, having been outscored by their opponents 13-3, ...The Otters' attack is led by midfielder Eva Arzola, a senior from Modesto, who has scored two goals. Fellow midfielder Sarah Alderson, a junior from Modesto, has scored the other goal for the Otters, coming Sept. 2 against Notre Dame de Namur. In goal, Graciela Holguin, a freshman from Stockton, has played every minute this season, recording a 2.27 goals against average. She leads the CCAA in saves (42) and saves per game (7). ...San Francisco State enters this week with a 3-2-1 overall record a 2-0 mark in the CCAA after recording two impressive wins over UC San Diego and Cal State Dominguez Hills last week. ...The Gators attack is led by midfielder Robin Bowman, a senior from San Francisco, who has scored three goals and added one assist. Just Behind Bowman is forward Myriah Johnson, a sophomore from Lakewood, Wash. who has scored two goals so far this season. ...Forward Zoila Marquez, a junior from Salinas, leads the Gators with two assists. ...In goal, Rachel Lauderdale, a junior from Mission Viejo, has gotten off to a fine start to her 2008 season. She leads the CCAA in goals against average (.35) and save percentage (.933) and is tied for second with HSU keeper Kelly Sandberg with three shutouts. ...Before facing the Jacks Sunday, the Gators will face Sonoma State Friday in Rohnert Park.
