ARCATA – Scoring early and keeping the Lumberjacks backpedaling throughout, Cal State Los Angeles claimed a 3-1 win over Humboldt State in California Collegiate Athletic Association women's soccer action Friday.
Coming into the match with a total of four goals scored all season, the Golden Eagles nearly doubled their total while improving their record to 2-5-1 overall and 1-4-0 in conference. Humboldt State lost its second straight following a seven-game unbeaten streak, dropping to 6-4-1 overall and 2-2-1 in the CCAA.
“(We played) a terrible first half and mediocre second half," HSU head coach Andy Cumbo said. “We can't rely on coming back from an early deficit like we have been lately.”
Khadijah Greenwood was into the Jacks' defense all night, firing four shots, scoring one goal and assisting on another. Also applying the pressure was Liz Franco, who set up the first score when she lofted a corner kick to Sarah Califf, who drove it into the net.
After holding that 1-0 lead at the half, the Eagles struck quickly in the second period when Greenwood gathered a rebound following another Califf shot, putting it away to provide a 2-0 advantage. The Lumberjacks countered nine minutes later with
Kelsey Gomula's penalty kick, awarded when Alison Lawrence was taken down in the box.
HSU pushed the pace for the next several minutes, but was deflated when Franco scored with nine minutes remaining after taking the ball from Greenwood and beating HSU keeper
Kelly Sandberg to the post.
Cal State Los Angeles held the offensive advantage, outshooting Humboldt State, 18-10. Golden Eagles' goalkeeper Heather Emswiler had four saves while Sandberg finished with five for HSU.
Humboldt State is back in action when it travels to face Cal State Dominguez Hills in Carson on Oct. 3.
