ARCATA – Taking a break from California Collegiate Athletic Association play, the Humboldt State men's soccer team defeated UC Santa Cruz 5-1 Sunday.
 
With the win, the Jacks move to 5-2-3 overall and UCSC falls to 4-4-2.
 
“We played some people who haven't played that much so far and tried some guys in different positions,” said Humboldt State head men's soccer coach Andy Cumbo. “It was a good result and good experience for us.”
 
The Jacks got out of the blocks quickly, but didn't find the back of the net until the 16th minute when Lyle Menk was on the end of Brian Holmes cross.
 
HSU had opportunities to score in the first half, but only managed to put away a single goal.
 
Five minutes into the second half ,Holmes was on the receiving end of a Roland Demombynes layoff pass to double the Jacks' lead.
 
Midfielder Josh Suggs added his name to the scoresheet with two goals in seven minutes, taking passes from Scott Mariani and Kete Meskill on each goal.
 
Daniel Adamski got HSU's final goal of the game when he took a botched clearance by UCSC goalkeeper Matt Mahowald.
 
“It was a disappointing first half for us in terms of finishing our chances,” said Cumbo. “We talked at halftime about taking advantage of our scoring opportunities and we did so, so we made progress in the regard.”
 
UCSC scored its lone goal with 15 minutes remaining when Bobby Petro headed Davin Kono's corner past HSU keeper Kyle Verle. Verle finished with three saves in his first career start.
 
The Jacks play one more non-conference game before getting back to CCAA action when they host Academy of Art Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the Redwood Bowl.
