Arcata – After dropping its first two games of the season, the Humboldt State women's soccer team now sports a three-game winning streak. The Jacks take their winning streak to Lacey, Wash., when they face Saint Martin's Friday at 2:30 p.m. The Jacks will then open their California Collegiate Athletic Association campaign against Chico State Sunday at 11:30 a.m.
Head-to-Head: Humboldt State has faced Saint Martin's only once, a 4-2 win last season. Chico State leads the all-time series against the Jacks, going 6-8-2, with the two teams winning on their home fields last season.
Cumbo's Comments: “Saint Martin's has had a lot of success early on this season. They have a very direct style of play and are very tough to play against at home,” Humboldt State head women's soccer coach Andy Cumbo said. “No matter what, when we play Chico State, it's always a good game. It's a great way to open conference play.”
Lumberjacks Notes: It seems as though home cooking was the cure as the Jacks recorded their first three victories of the season this past week. On Monday, the Jacks dominated all areas of the game in a 3-0 victory over a first-year Academy of Art program. The Jacks then defeated Oregon Tech 1-0 and Simpson University 2-0 Friday and Saturday, respectively. ...Forward
Kim Carroll, a sophomore from Santa Rosa, and midfielder Anna Etway, a sophomore from Cirvallis, Ore., are tied for the team lead in goals with two. Carroll is also tied for second in the CCAA with 14 shots taken and eighth in the conference in shots per game (2.80). ...The Jacks' defense also put on a strong showing this past week, posting three straight shutouts.
Kelsey Gomula, a senior from San Diego, and
Karen Pontoni, a freshman from Bayside, have been two of the most consistent and impressive performers so far this season, according to Cumbo. ...In goal,
Kelly Sandberg, a sophomore from Bellingham, Wash., has seen her goals against average fall to .59 with the three shutouts (one combined) this past week. She is in the top five in five of the six goalkeeping categories, with the most notable being a tie for first with two shutouts.
Opponent's Notes: Saint Martin's has started its 2008 season 2-1-0 after facing three CCAA teams in a span of eight days. The Saints claimed victories over Cal State San Bernardino and Chico State, 1-0 in overtime and 3-2 respectively, and lost to No. 24 nationally ranked Cal State Dominguez Hills, 3-2 on Friday. ...The Saints' attack is lead by forward Jill Jensen, a sophomore from Puyalupp, Wash., who is ranked third in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference in points with six and is tied for first in the conference with four assists. ...Along with Jensen, five other players have scored this season for the Saints. ...In goal, Ashley Engel, a freshman from Burien, Wash., has allowed five goals, making 24 saves and has recorded one shutout. ...Chico State enters this week with a 3-2-0 and were ranked No. 16 and No. 3 in the West Region in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America/Adidas poll released Sept. 2. The Wildcats went 1-2 this past week, beating Northwest Nazarene 2-1 then losing 3-2 to St. Martin's and 3-0 to No. 8 Seattle Pacific. ...The Wildcats have been led offensively early on this season by forward Melissa Lindsay, a senior from Sacramento, and midfielder Lisa Webster, a freshman from El Dorado. Both players have scored two goals and tallied one assist this season. ...Midfielder Kelsey Ikemoto, a sophomore from Torrance, leads the Wildcats in assists with two which is good for second in the CCAA. ...In goal, Natalie Bensky, a junior from Willow Creek, and Lauren Vence, a freshman from Clayton, have split the minutes equally for the Wildcats. Bensky has the lower goals against average (1.20), higher save percentage (.667) and has two shutouts, one individual and one combined with Vence.
