Jacks earn tie with Golden Eagles

ARCATA – The Humboldt State women's soccer team built a 3-0 lead over the Cal State L.A. Golden Eagles in the first 51 minutes of play, but three unanswered goals in the second half by CSULA and two scoreless overtimes left the match in a 3-3 result.  The Friday night tie in Redwood Bowl leaves the Lumberjacks record at 7-5-1 overall, 4-4-1 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play.  The Golden Eagles are now 10-2-2, 7-2-2 in conference action.

Kim Carroll scored the Jacks first goal.  Off a set piece form just outside the 18, Ariele Kern served a perfect ball the Carroll headed in to give the HSU the 1-0 lead.

At the 37:52 mark senior Allison Lawrence netted her first goal of the season.  Off a free ball in the CSULA penalty area, Lawrence took a shot high to the far post and give the Jacks a 2-0 lead, which they took to the half.

Six minutes into the second half Carroll got her second goal of the night.  The Golden Eagles turned it over six yards out and Carroll pounced on it.  She shot it to the far post and gave the Jacks a 3-0 lead.  It was the 13th goal of her career and ties her with Kim Halloran for sixth on the schools all-time list.

But the joy wouldn't last.  Eight minutes later, at the 59:58 mark CSULA cut the lead to 3-1 when Gabbi Segall scored on a shot to the near post.

The score remained 3-1 until the 80th minute, when Golden Eagle Ann Marie Tangorra took a cross and dinked HSU keeper Kelly Sandberg and put it in from five yards out.  Less than a minute and a half, in a scramble in front of the net, Tangorra pick up the ball and tapped it in for the tying goal.

The two sides played two scoreless overtime periods, in which the Jacks out shot CSULA 4-2 but neither side could get the winning goal.

Kern led the Lumberjacks' attack with five shots, Carroll had three, all on goal and two that found the back of the net.

Sandberg played all 110 minutes and allowed three goals while making four saves.  Her record is now 7-5-1.

“As well as the men played as a team, that is how poorly the ladies played,” head coach Christian Johnson said.  “Our back line did a poor job of marking and there was virtually no communication.  This is a very disappointing result.  We had them and our mistakes allowed L.A. to get a point and cost us two.”
