Overtime goal dooms Jacks

ARCATA – Despite playing quality soccer throughout the match, an overtime goal by Cal State Dominguez Hills sent the Humboldt State women's soccer team home with a 2-1 loss in Redwood Bowl on Sunday.  The win improves CSUDH's record to 9-6-0, 8-4-0 in California Collegiate Athletic Association action while HSU falls to 7-6-1, 4-5-1 in conference play.

In the first 30 minutes the Jacks had the better run of play.  They outshot the Toros 5-3 and with in two minutes of each other, Carly Kolpin had a header that was saved by the CSUDH keeper Alyssa Congdon and another that banged of the post.  Either could have gone in to give the Jacks and early lead, but at the 30:33 mark the Toros got the first break.

In a scramble in front of the HSU goal, Cal State Dominguez Hills' Lexi Ford scooped up a loose ball and headed in from five yards out to give the Toros a 1-0 lead.

“Until we got scored on we played some great soccer,” said head coach Christian Johnson.  “From a possession stand point, the counter attacking we had, the serves that were played in the box and the organization in the defense we were playing very well.  We gave up that goal and things turned to a more back and forth type of game.”

In the 40th minute Jacks defender Karen Pontoni had a throw-in.  At the near post a CSUDH defender headed back into the crossbar of her own goal.  A scramble for the ball ensued, but the Lumberjacks were unable to take advantage of the chaos.  Two corner kicks for HSU followed, but they were turned away as well and the teams went to the half with Cal State Dominguez Hills with a 1-0 lead.

Junior Kim Carroll got the equalizer in the 60 the minute.  After a long punt from Jacks territory was misplayed by the Toros defense, Carroll took the ball 30 yards out and went one-on-one with the CSUDH keeper.  From 18 yards out, and with surgical precision, Carroll placed the ball inside the far post to tie the match at 1-1.

The goal was her fourth of the season, 14th of her career, and moved her alone into 6th place on the school's all-time career scoring list.

The match continued to go back and fourth and regulation time ended with the score still at 1-1.

In overtime, the Toros took the only shot.  At the 95:54 mark, CSUDH had a corner kick.  It was flicked across the mouth of the goal and Allyssia Vasquez headed it home for the winning score.

The Lumberjacks head out on the road for their next four matches.  On Friday, Oct. 16 they will be at San Francisco State for a 3 p.m. kickoff and on Sunday it is a 11:30 a.m. start at Cal State Monterey Bay.
