Jacks break through with win over Toros

CARSON — Humboldt State snapped its six-match losing streak Friday with a hard-fought win over Cal State Dominguez Hills, 25-20,23-25,26-24,26-28,15-9, in California Collegiate Athletic Association volleyball.

The victory improves the Lumberjacks' record to 7-13 overall and 3-9 in the CCAA heading into Saturday's matinee match against Cal State Los Angeles. Cal State Dominguez Hills dropped to 1-19 overall and 1-12 in league.

An untidy affair from start to finish, the Jacks managed to pull out the final set after allowing the Toros to tie the match in the fourth. Oceana Matsubu had four kills for the Jacks in the final set, that eventually ended on a put down by Lesley Kalbrener.

"This was an ugly match by both sides today," HSU head coach Sue Woodstra said. "Still, it was a 'W', and we'll try to get back on track from here.

For the match, Callan Finney was credited with 20 kills for the Jacks, while Matsubu and Allison Drobish added 16 each. Drobish also paced HSU with six blocks, including a pair of solo efforts.

CSUDH's Samantha Maxwell topped all players with 21 kills, but also had 15 attack errors in the match. Ashley Clark had 17 kills for the Toros.
