Jacks seek return to winning ways at home

ARCATA  – This week the Humboldt State women's soccer team (7-5-0, 4-4-0) hopes some home cooking will get it back on the winning track in a pair of California Collegiate Athletic Association matches.  On Friday HSU welcomes the Cal State Los Angeles Golden Eagles to Redwood Bowl for a 7 p.m. kickoff.  The Jacks end the weekend on Sunday at 2 p.m. with a match against the Toros of Cal State Dominguez Hills.

HSU was swept in a pair of CCAA matches last week on the road.  On Friday HSU lost a heartbreaker in the 103rd minute, 2-1 at Cal State East Bay.   Against UC San Diego, on Sunday in La Jolla, the Jacks spotted the Tritons three goals and never recovered in a 3-1 loss.

Head-to-Head
Cal State L.A. leads all-time series 3-1-0 with the Jacks.  As CCAA opponents, this will be the fourth meeting between the two schools. The Golden Eagles have taken the last three matchups, including a 3-1 decision last season in Redwood Bowl.  HSU's only win came in non-conference action.  In 2003, Humboldt State traveled to Los Angeles and earned a 4-2 result. …Against Cal State Dominguez Hills, the Lumberjacks have a 1-5-1 record.  The lone win came in 2003 at CSUDH, 1-0.  As CCAA opponents the Jacks have yet to defeat the Toros.  They are 0-2-1 and dropped a 2-0 result at Carson last year.

Johnson's Comments
“Friday was a disappointing result.  As a coach you say that you beat that team (Cal State East Bay) probably nine out of 10 times.  The field was very uneven and that made it difficult for us to play the possession game we prefer.  In the last 10 minutes of the match and throughout both overtimes, I felt we had the better play, but we gave up a soft goal to start the match and that caught up with us.” … “At UCSD the score did not reflect how the game was played.  For all but 15 minutes of that game it was a great battle.  It was a fun game to watch, but like the East Bay game, we gave up some soft goals.  Our back four and keeper have kept us in other matches and have allowed us to win, but in both games this weekend there were breakdowns that cost us chances to win.” … “I think this weekend will be the toughest we have faced this year.  Cal State Dominguez Hills has dropped some games, but we are playing two top quality opponents.  CSUDH has a lot of tradition and those ladies have played in a lot of big games, so they will be ready to go and we will have to play our best to get a win.  As far as Cal State Los Angeles, the biggest advantage we will have is that we are playing at home, in front of our fans and on our field.  Redwood Bowl is a difficult field to play on if you have never been here.  They will have to adjust to it.  If we play the way we did against Chico State, we have a chance to get a positive result against them.”
