ARCATA – After a disappointing loss to Chico State on Friday night, the Humboldt State women's soccer team came out on Sunday afternoon and made the Warriors of CSU Stanislaus pay. The final score was 1-0, but the Jacks' dominated the match.
The win is the first for HSU in California Collegiate Athletics Association play for 2009. Overall the Jacks are 4-2-0, 1-1-0 CCAA while Stanislaus is now 4-2-0 overall and 0-2-0 in conference.
The shutout win was junior keeper
Kelly Sandberg's third of the year and 10th of her Lumberjack career, which moved her into a tie with Lydia Rodriguez for third place on the school's all-time list.
Humboldt State controlled play throughout the first half and had the only real scoring chances. In the 27th minute,
Arielle Kern, a native of Lomita, stole the ball as a Stanislaus defender attempted a clear. She dribbled in and blasted a shot to the far post from just inside the penalty area that Warriors' keeper Jessica Sitarz dove for and knocked away with a spectacular one handed save.
“I thought Arielle caused them a lot of trouble,” said head coach Christian Johnson. “They had to mark her all day and that opened up chances for other players.”
Then at the 43:37 mark, the Jacks played a ball from outside the 18 to the top of the six. The ball was deflected through the box and onto the foot of sophomore
Sarah Nakamoto who scored to the near post. The tally was her first of the season.
“I just slipped in behind the defense and when the ball was played through, I was in the right spot to knock it home,” Nakamoto said.
The teams went to the half with HSU holding a 1-0 advantage on the scoreboard and a 4-0 lead in shots.
In the second half, Humboldt State's possession game took over. The Jacks kept the ball on the ground and out shot the Warriors 6-1.
“Our possession game went well today,” Johnson said. “In the first half, we had to many air balls in the final third of the field. However, in the second half, we created more quality chances in the box because we kept the ball on the ground.
“I'm proud of the way we rebounded from the Chico game,” he added “It was a heartbreaking loss, but we rebounded, came out today prepared to play and got a good result.”
The Jacks next head out on the road for a pair of southern California CCAA matches. On Friday they will be at CSU San Bernardino for a 1:30 p.m. kick off. On Sunday they wrap up the trip with a 2 p.m. start at Cal Poly Pomona.
