SAN BERNARDINO – In what head coach Christian Johnson described as a sauna, the Humboldt State women's soccer team fell to the Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes 2-0 on Friday. The loss drops the Western Region's No. 7 ranked Jacks to 4-3-0 overall and 1-2-0 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association and CSUSB improved to 3-4-0, 2-1-0 in the CCAA.
“This is the first time our teams have played in this type of heat this season and it really affected us in the second half,” Johnson said. “We had some athletes who were bordering on heat stroke.”
The Coyotes had a 7-2 advantage in shots in the first 45 minutes and found the back of the net with just 15 seconds to go before the half. Allison Pena hit a high lob from about 30 yards that was misplayed by Lumberjacks keeper
Kelly Sandberg. The ball bounded over her head and found the back of the net, giving CSUSB a 1-0 lead at the half.
Just over four minutes into the second half, at the 49:14 mark, the Coyotes Kristina Gomez emerged from a scramble inside the penalty area and knocked in the second and final goal of the match. The Jacks could muster just one shot in the second half to Cal State San Bernardino's 12.
The Jacks finish the road trip on Sunday at 2 p.m. in Pomona against Cal Poly Pomona.
