Nord’s late goal lifts Jacks over Gators

ARCATA – Freshman Kaitlyn Nord's goal in the 106th minute gave the Jacks a 1-0 double-overtime win over the San Francisco State Gators in Redwood Bowl on Sunday.  The win improves the Jacks record to 7-3-0 overall and 4-2-0 in California Collegiate Athletics Association play.  SFSU drops to 3-5-1, 1-4-1 in conference.

The Jacks had two great chances in the first half.  In the 21st minute sophomore Sara Nakamoto blasted a shot the hit the crossbar and at the 41:37 mark Bre Taylor, a product of Montgomery High School in Santa Rosa, also had a shot go off the crossbar.  SFSU best chances were two headers that were turned away in the box and the teams went to the half at 0-0.

The second period was played mostly between the 18's with each side getting off just a single shot.  Carly Kolpin had the HSU attempt at the 73:53 mark, which was saved by Gator goalie Annicia Jones.  Kolpin also had the lone shot from either side in the first overtime.

“The last 10 minutes of the second half and in both overtimes we started getting some creative chances that I was happy with,” head coach Christian Johnson said.

In the second overtime the Jacks continued to press.  Nakamoto and Kim Carroll each took shots within the first three minutes.

Then at the 105:22 mark, Carroll played a ball back to Nord who was on the far sideline.  From about 35 yards out Nord lobbed a shot that sailed over the keepers outstretched arm, hit the far post and angled in for the game winner.

“Kim (Carroll) dropped the ball back to me,” Nord said.  “We had to keep taking shots because the clock was running out.  I knew that if I shot it on frame someone else could get to it if it didn't go in.  I saw it go in and that was awesome.  It was my first goal in college and my parents were here to see it, so that was pretty special.”

“Today we played a team that was very physical,” Johnson said.  “They were bigger than us, bumped us off nearly every ball and won the majority of the 50-50 balls.  Although we didn't necessarily play our style of soccer all game, I was proud of our athletes for fighting back.  Win, lose or tie it was as good battle for both teams.  I'm just glad that we came out with the result.  We'll take an ugly win anytime.

“On defense, Karen Pontoni, Megan Kobler, Megan Kendall and Sarah Nakamoto, faced a player today, Kara Cunningham, that we have yet to see in this conference.  She was so physical and so much bigger than we were that she would just post up and wait for the ball.  The back line did a solid job today.  We still have some organizational issues to work out in the back, but they showed a lot of pride today and didn't want to be scored upon.

“Kendall made a lot of dangerous forward runs. I like that and sometimes she needs to be a bit more selfish and take it that extra 10 yards.  She certainly was a spark plug on the offensive side as well."

With the win the Jacks stay in second place in the CCAA North, two points behind Chico State who defeated Cal State Dominguez Hills, 2-1 earlier today.

“It's good that Chico State defeated a team that is highly placed in the (CCAA) South,” said assistant coach Brendan Bourdage.  “Our win is especially important for us to keep pace with Chico and build momentum as we prepare for our trip this week.”

Keeper Kelly Sandberg made three saves and got the win and her fourth shutout of the season.  She now has 11 for her career and is alone in third place on the Jacks career list.

Offensively HSU out shot SFSU 8-6, led by Nakamoto's three shots.

The Jacks head out on the road next week as they visit Hayward to take on Cal State East Bay on Friday, Oct. 2 before making their way to La Jolla for a meeting with the Tritons of UCSD on Sunday, Oct.4.
