HSU looks to keep momentum going on the road

ARCATA – This week the Humboldt State women's soccer team (7-3-0, 4-2-0) heads out on the road for a pair of California Collegiate Athletic Association matches.  The Jacks travel to Hayward to face the Pioneers of Cal State East Bay on Friday for a 2:30 p.m. kickoff.  On Sunday HSU will be in La Jolla for a 2:30 p.m. tilt against the Tritons of UC San Diego.

HSU swept a pair of CCAA matches last week in Redwood Bowl.  On Friday the Jacks got goals from Kim Carroll and Arielle Kern in a 2-1 win over Cal State Monterey Bay.   Against San Francisco State, freshman Kaitlyn Nord scored in the 106th minute and Kelly Sandberg made three saves, giving the Jacks to a 1-0 victory Sunday afternoon.

Head-to-Head
Humboldt State holds a 6-0-1 record against Cal State East Bay.  The two sides have not faced off in 11 years.  The last meeting was in 1998 and the teams played to a 0-0 tie.  Prior to the 1998 match the both schools were members of the Northern California Athletic Conference and played six times in three seasons with the Jacks taking each one.  …This will be the first time the teams have met as members of the CCAA.  Against UCSD, the Lumberjacks have yet to get a win.  They are 0-7-1 all-time and have dropped the last two meetings against the Tritons.  The lone tie came in La Jolla in 2006.

Johnson's Comments
“We are thrilled with last weekend's results.  I don't think we played as well as past weekends, in regard to possessing the ball.  There wasn't as much creativity, but a lot of that had to do with our opponents not allowing us to play our way.” … “The women found a way to win against two larger and more physical opponents and I was very proud that we found a way to win.  When we did get into the final third of the field we showed some creativity and took advantage of the opportunities.” …“We are very confident in what we are doing and know that in a close game we can make plays to win.  We have done it already this season and that will help us when we get into tough situations later on.   They go into matches expecting to and believing that they will win.  That is very powerful.” …“(Cal State) East Bay's win last week at (Cal Poly) Pomona was impressive.  Any time you win on the road in conference it is a feat.  We have to be aware that they (CSUEB) are probably on a real high after that game and are definitely a dangerous team.  But that one is a must win for us.  No. 2 in the North may not make the conference tournament.  We have to keep pace with what Chico State has been doing and what the top teams in the South have been doing.” …“When you are talking about UCSD, forget the number of losses they have, Brian (McManus) is a great coach and he always has good players.  It is the same scenario as the men's side.  The San Diego area has a lot of good players and a lot of them want to stay home.  No matter where I have been UCSD is always a tough opponent and we expect the same on this trip.  We expect this match to be our toughest yet in conference.”

Lumberjack Notes
With 12 points, HSU is in second place in the CCAA North and is riding the conference's longest current wining streak, three matches.   With two wins over the weekend, the Jacks increased their lead over third place, extending it from two points to four.  They slashed three points off the lead of the number one team in the division, Chico State, and are now just two points behind the Wildcats.  …Junior striker Arielle Kern leads the squad in goals (6), points (13) and game-winners (3).  She has twice scored two goals in a game, including in the 3-2 win over CPP.  …Katie Forba, a senior, and freshman Carly Kolpin each have two goals.  Kolpin's scores have both been game-winners.  In goal, keeper Kelly Sandberg has played 933:14 minutes, and has allowed 10 goals while making 47 saves for a .825 save percentage and 0.69 goals against average.  Sandberg's record is 7-3-0.  Her 1-0 shutout of SFSU on Sunday was the 11th of her Jacks career and moved her into third place alone on the school's all-time list. … Among CCAA players, Kern ranks first in game-winners, second in goals and fourth in points.  Kolpin is tied for third in game winners and Sarah Nakamoto and Kim Carroll are tied for 10th in assists (2).  Sandberg ranks in the top five of five categories.  She is second in saves per game (4.70), tied for third in saves, fourth in shutouts, tied for fourth in save percentage and tied for fifth in goals against average.

Opponents Notes
The Cal State East Bay Pioneers (2-6-3, 1-4-2) are in sixth place in the CCAA South.  The Pioneers broke a six-match conference winless streak on Sunday as they traveled to and defeated Cal Poly Pomona, 2-0. …Cal State East Bay's offense is led by Zuly Diaz, with four goals and two assists for 10 points.  Two of Diaz's goals have been the game-winner.  Shianna Falk has netted two goals and leads the team with three assists.  Nina Cefalo has a 2-6-3 record with four shutouts and a save percentage of .727.  …The Jacks and Pioneers have played eight common opponents, including six in the CCAA.  CSUEB went 1-5-2 against them, while the Lumberjacks were 5-3-0.  …Cal State East Bay is led by ninth year head coach Amy Gerace.  Gerace has compiled a 67-68-15 record in the last eight seasons in Hayward. …The Tritons of UC San Diego (7-2-0, 5-2-0) are tied for second place in the CCAA South with Cal State Dominguez Hills.  Last week UCSD took a pair of road wins 1-0 at Cal Poly Pomona and 2-0 at Cal State San Bernardino.  Sarah McTigue, eight points on four goals, and Jessica Wi, with three goals and two points for eight points, six points lead the Tritons' offense.  Kristin Armstrong has a 6-2-0 record in goal while saving shots at a .828 clip. …The Jacks and Tritons have six common conference opponents.  Both teams went 4-2-0 against them. UCSD will host Sonoma State prior to playing the Jacks. … Brian McManus, in his 23rd season, leads the Tritons.  His UCSD record is 370-53-29.
