BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Coming off a disappointing loss at Seattle Pacific on Thursday, the Humboldt State women's soccer team jumped out to a 1-0 first half lead and added another goal in the second half to defeat the Western Washington University Vikings 2-0 on Saturday.
The Jacks' win improves their record to 2-1-0 while the Vikings, a participant in the NCAA Division II Far West Regional final last season, fell to 0-2-1.
HSU opened the scoring when sophomore
Sarah Nakamoto forced a turnover deep in the left corner and played a cross to the top of the penalty area where
Carly Kolpin, a freshman and native of Eugene, Ore., blasted a shot high in the left corner of the net. It was Kolpin's first collegiate goal and came at the 31:39 mark.
The Lumberjacks made it 2-0 in the 62nd minute on
Arielle Kern's team-leading third goal of the season. It was a high chip shot from 12 yards out after a pass from Kolpin.
Humboldt State earned the win despite being outshot 23-4.
Kelly Sandberg, a native of Bellingham, Wash., earned her first shutout of the year making 10 saves.
The Jacks wrap up this three-match road trip on Monday, Sept. 7 in Lacey, Wash. Humboldt State will take on the Saint Martin's Saints (3-1-0) in a 12 p.m. kickoff.
