Women's Soccer blanks Western Washington

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Coming off a disappointing loss at Seattle Pacific on Thursday, the Humboldt State women's soccer team jumped out to a 1-0 first half lead and added another goal in the second half to defeat the Western Washington University Vikings 2-0 on Saturday.

The Jacks' win improves their record to 2-1-0 while the Vikings, a participant in the NCAA Division II Far West Regional final last season, fell to 0-2-1.

HSU opened the scoring when sophomore Sarah Nakamoto forced a turnover deep in the left corner and played a cross to the top of the penalty area where Carly Kolpin, a freshman and native of Eugene, Ore., blasted a shot high in the left corner of the net.   It was Kolpin's first collegiate goal and came at the 31:39 mark.

The Lumberjacks made it 2-0 in the 62nd minute on Arielle Kern's team-leading third goal of the season.  It was a high chip shot from 12 yards out after a pass from Kolpin.

Humboldt State earned the win despite being outshot 23-4.  Kelly Sandberg, a native of Bellingham, Wash., earned her first shutout of the year making 10 saves.

The Jacks wrap up this three-match road trip on Monday, Sept. 7 in Lacey, Wash.  Humboldt State will take on the Saint Martin's Saints (3-1-0) in a 12 p.m. kickoff.
