CARSON – A pair of second half goals spelled doom for the Humboldt State men's soccer team as they dropped game one of a two-game road trip, 2-0, to the Toros of Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday night.
The loss drops the Lumberjacks to 2-8-3 overall, 2-7-2 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play. The Toros improve to 9-2-2, 7-2-2 in conference action.
Neither team was able to generate much offense in the first 45 minutes. The Jacks were held to just three shots, two by midfielder Michael Schmidt, and none that reached Toros keeper Markus Dickerson. CSUDH took six shots, five off the foot of Greg Piechota. Kyle Verle, in goal for HSU, made one save. The teams went to halftime in a 0-0 tie.
Cal State Dominguez Hills outshot the Jacks 5-to-0 in the first 17 minutes of the second half. At the 62:39 mark the Toros' Andre Turoldo finally snuck one past Verle. Nate Austin and Diego Turoldo were credited with assists as CSUDH took a 1-0 lead.
In the 85th minute the Toros put the game away on an Alex Munoz goal. Austin and Mike Piechota picked up the assists.
HSU was out shot 9-to-3 in the second 45 minutes, but two of the Jacks shots came in the final three minutes. For the match the Toros took 16 shots to HSU's six.
The Jacks finish their two game road trip on Sunday at Cal State Los Angeles. Kickoff is scheduled for 11:30 a.m.
