SANTA ROSA – A goal in the final minute sent the Humboldt State women's soccer team to a heartbreaking 0-1 loss against the Seawolves of Sonoma State on Sunday afternoon.
The loss drops the Jacks to 3-12-1 overall, 3-10-1 in California Collegiate Athletic Association action. Sonoma State improves to 3-8-4, 2-8-4 in conference action.
Several days of pouring rain in Sonoma County saturated Seawolf Soccer Field and forced the match to be moved to Trione Fields, an all-weather facility in Santa Rosa.
In the first 45 minutes the sides played nearly even. HSU took four shots, all on goal, led by Kim Carroll's two in the first 12 minutes. Sonoma State also took four shots, one of which reached Jacks keeper Jennie Paugh who made the save and the teams went to the half tied 0-0.
In the second half the Seawolves dominated the attack, outshooting HSU 11-1. Three of the first 10 shots were on frame and turned away by Paugh, but with 11 seconds to play in regulation the 11th shot of the half found the back of the net.
At the 89:49 mark Allie Maduell beat an HSU defender to the endline and played a cross that JJ McFarin put in the right side of the net for the game winner.
For the match HSU was outshot 15-to-5. Courtney Grixti, the SSU keeper, and Paugh each made four saves. The Lumberjacks attack was led by Carroll's three shots.
