SEASIDE – Senior Josh Suggs tallied three goals and Scott Mariani, also a senior, added a pair in a 5-1 throttling of the Cal State Monterey Bay (CSUMB) Otters on Friday afternoon.
The Lumberjacks overall record now stands at 4-10-3, 4-9-2 in California Collegiate Athletic Association action. CSUMB drops to 1-13-2, 1-12-2 in conference play.
With his first career hat trick, Suggs now has eight goals for the year and 22 for his career, which moves him into sixth place on the progam's all-time goal scoring list.
Mariani's two goals are also a single-game career high and tie his single season goal total set last year.
In the fourth minute, Suggs opened the scoring as Austin Swatrz played a ball through the Otter defense to his foot. One-on-one with the keeper, he tucked it into the left corner of the goal for a 1-0 lead.
Just over four minutes later, at the 8:08 mark, a Mariani shot was saved by CSUMB keeper Sam Campanelli, but not controlled. Mariani leaped on the rebound and hammered it home putting the Jacks up 2-0.
Humboldt State out shot the Otters 6-to-3 in the first 45 minutes, led by Suggs' three and Mariani's two. Jacks' keeper Kyle Verle made three saves to Campanelli's two.
At the 63:32 mark Lyle Menk served a ball to Suggs who dribbled to the left side of the field and beat the keeper with a shot to the near post for a 3-0 lead.
In the 79th minute Mariani dribbled the ball behind the defense and shot to the right side of the goal to put the Jacks up 4-0.
CSUMB got a goal in the 85th minute to end the shutout, but just over a minute later at the 85:45 mark Suggs struck for the third time. Dan Mariani played a ball to Suggs which he shot to the far post for the final margin of 5-1.
The Jacks five goals are the most by the side since an 8-0 pounding of Simpson University in 2007.
For the match the Jacks outshot Cal State Monterey Bay 13-to-9, including 10-to-7 in shots on goal. Suggs' five shots and Mariani's four topped the HSU attack.
Swartz and Dan Mariani's assists were their first points of the year and of their collegiate careers.
Verle played 74:53 making four saves before being lifted for redshirt freshman Ryan Addes who made two saves and allowed the lone Otters goal.
The Lumberjacks wrap up the 2010 season on Sunday in San Francisco when they face the Gators of San Francisco State in an 11:30 a.m. kickoff.
