ARCATA – The Humboldt State women's soccer team scored twice in the first three minutes and went on to defeat the Cal State Monterey Bay Otters 2-1 in Redwood Bowl on Sunday afternoon ending a four-game winless streak.
The win improves the Jacks record to 2-8-0 overall, 2-6-0 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play. CSUMB falls to 2-8-0, 1-7-0 in conference action.
At the 2:06 mark, defender Megan Kendall took a free kick that Arielle Kern headed on toward the goal. Sarah Nakamoto was perfectly placed a headed the ball home to give the Jacks a 1-0 lead. It was Nakamoto's second goal of the season. Kern and Kendall picked their first assists of the season on the goal.
Just 42 seconds later Terri Tigert hammered a shot that hit the crossbar and deflected back in front of the goal. Kim Carroll was right there, 10 yards out, and took the shot. It deflected off the crossbar and into the goal. It was Carroll's second tally of the season and 16th of her career. It moved her into a tie with Gabby Ahmadia for fourth place on the programs all-time scoring list.
Just before the end of the half, the Otters cut the HSU lead to one.
AJ Cibulsky had a throw in from 10 yards off the endline. The ball sailed toward the goal where Jackie Malone headed it in. It was her first goal of the year.
The teams went to halftime with HSU leading on the scoreboard and in shots, 7-to-4.
In the second half neither side found the back of the net, but CSUMB had the best chance.
In the 82nd minute the Otters Natalie Argueta got in behind the Jacks defense and went one-v-one with HSU keeper Jennie Paugh. Paugh came out and made a diving save, but didn't control the ball.
Marlina Massagli then gathered the ball from the Argueta shot, five feet from the left post, and fired one that Kaitlyn Nord blocked. The ball went to the foot of Shoshana Wagerin who shot it high over the crossbar to end the threat.
The teams ended tied on shots with 11 and HSU with the advantage in shots on-goal 6-to-5.
Each keeper made four saves. HSU's Paugh earned the win, the second of her collegiate career.
