ARCATA – The Humboldt State women's soccer team suffered its worse loss in five years as the Cal State Stanislaus Warriors defeated them 4-0 on Friday night in Redwood Bowl.
“We, the staff, are extremely disappointed with this loss and the performance of this team,” head coach Christian Johnson said.
The win improves the Warriors record to 9-2-0 overall, 7-2-0 in California Collegiate Athletic Association action. HSU is now 2-9-0, 2-7-0 in conference play.
The last time the Jacks suffered a four-goal loss was in 2005 when Cal State Stanislaus beat HSU 4-0 in Turlock. The Jacks last allowed four goals in 2007. That was a 4-1 defeat at Seattle Pacific.
The shot count for the match was 15-to-14 in favor of the Warriors, but of its 15 shots CSUS had nine on frame of which four found the back of the net. The Jacks had just four shots on goal among its 14.
Cal State Stanislaus opened the scoring at the 23:00 mark when Karenee Demery took shot from 14 yards out on the left side. Briana McClain snuck in from the weak side and redirected the ball under HSU keeper Jennie Paugh's reach.
Just over four minutes later, in the 28th minute, Alexia Poon scored on the penalty kick low to the right corner of the net. It gave the Warriors a 2-0 lead.
“In the first 10 minutes we had the better run of play,” Johnson said. “We always have the better run of play in the beginning of games. After that point we lose our way. We are not sure why that happens.
“You would think our players would look back at that UC San Diego game (a 2-1 victory for the Jacks). We didn't always have the run of play, but we played hard, really hard on both sides of the ball for 90 minutes.”
The Jacks best chance of the night came with 10 minutes to go in the first half. Arielle Kern took the ball down the right side and served it to the front of the net. Carly Kolpin headed it just left of the net. It came right to Kim Carroll at the far post, but Carroll couldn't get off a shot to the open net and the teams went to the half with the Warriors with a 2-0 lead.
At the 58:04 mark Demery scored the first of her two second half goals. On this one she got behind the defense off a long throughball and beat Paugh to the near post.
Three and a half minutes later it was Demery again on a long throughball to the near post to finish the scoring at 4-0.
The Jacks wrap up their four-game home stand on Sunday against Chico State. The match is scheduled for 2 p.m. in Redwood Bowl.
