Jacks drop 2-1 result to East Bay

Arielle Kern scored the Jacks lone goal against CSU East Bay.
ARCATA – Despite outshooting the Cal State East Bay Poineers 15-to-9 overall, including 5-to-2 in shots on-goal, the Humboldt State women's soccer team lost 2-1 on Sunday in Redwood Bowl.

The win improves the Pioneers record to 4-2-1 overall, 2-2-0 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play.  Humboldt State falls to 1-5-0, 1-3-0 in conference action.

In the first half the shots were even at 4-to-4 and the Jacks had better scoring opportunities, but CSUEB got the goals.

At the 26:14 mark, Gail Bassett scored when a Pioneer corner kick bounced off the head of an HSU defender.  The ball bounced right onto Bassett's forehead and found the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.

In the 35th minute a cross from Jessica Hamister found the foot of Eugenie Foote who put it high to the far post for a 2-0 lead.

The Jacks best chances happened early.

In the 10th minute Carly Kolpin had a header go wide left off a free kick by Sarah Nakamoto.

At the 11:16 mark, Kim Carroll blasted a shot from the top of the six, off a centering pass from Kylie Riebe, that Pioneer keeper Donna Williams stopped.

In the 14th minute Nakamoto took another free kick from just outside the 18-yard box.  Arielle Kern crashed the front of the net and headed the ball just wide to the left.

“Once you let a team get ahead or stick around you are going to play rushed and not play your game,” head coach Christian Johnson said.  “I was afraid we would have a let down after the UCSD and that is exactly what happened.  My worst nightmare played out right in front of my eyes.”

The Jacks finally broke thorough in the 61st minute.  Kern scored on a header that came off a free kick by Nakamoto from 34 yards out.

The Jacks desperately tried to get the equalizer, outshooting East Bay 11-to-5 in the period and taking four cornerkicks to the Pioneers' one, but Williams turned away every shot that came to her and secured the victory for Cal State East Bay.

Jennie Paugh, making her second start in goal, was tagged with the loss.  Her record is now 1-2-0.

“I think we played better in the second half, but we were not prepared to play today, Johnson said.  “We played at their level.  They scored some goals and we played catch up the whole time.  We didn't deserve to win.”
