Head-to-Head

Humboldt State's record against Chico State is 6-9-5.   Last year the Wildcats took the match in Redwood Bowl 1-0, but in Chico the teams finished in a 0-0 tie.  Since the inception of the women's soccer program at HSU in 1995, HSU and Chico State have met at least once a year except for the 2002 and 2003 seasons.  Goals have been hard to come by recently between these teams.  Of the last four meetings, three have ended in 0-0 ties, the other result, a 1-0 win for Chico State.  HSU last beat the Wildcats, 2-1, in the 2007 season. … Cal State Stanislaus and the Lumberjacks are tied in the all-time series 5-5-0.  The Warriors beat the Jacks by the score of 2-0 in Turlock last season, but the Jacks took a 1-0 win in Arcata earlier in the year.  As members of the CCAA, the Jacks have take four the seven matches.

Johnson's Comments

“Sunday was a letdown and I was fearful of that.  I think we learned a valuable lesson.  Just because a team is on the bottom of the table doesn't mean it is going to be an easy game or an easy win.  There are no easy games in this conference.  I'm sure Chico and Stanislaus will be ready for us after we beat UC San Diego.  It is still early in the conference schedule and there is time for us to rebound.  We are not out of it by any means.  We have lost some games that we would have expected to win so that puts more pressure on us as we move forward.” … “We have to be mentally prepared this week because we have so many injuries that we are dealing with.  Chelsea LaRue is a very important part of our midfield and she will not be able to go.  Defender Karen Pontoni is questionable.  Kim Carroll and Arielle Kern, our starting forwards, are day-to-day.  Kelly Sandberg's season is over with an injury, so Jennie Paugh will be out keeper from here on out.  She lacks experience, so we have told her to just make the saves she is supposed to make and then come up with some big ones and that will keep us in games.  Jennie and the back four need to clean up their play.  We have given up to many soft goals.” … “We have the ability to play with anyone in this conference, it is just a matter of what Lumberjacks team shows up.  If the team that beat UC San Diego shows up we will be fine, but if not we will struggle.  This week and the games moving forward are about us and how we play, not as much of whom we are going up against.”

Lumberjack Notes

HSU is 1-5-0 overall and 1-3-0 in CCAA play  - fourth in the North Division. … Senior Arielle Kern and junior Sarah Nakamoto lead the Jacks attack with one goal and one assists each. Senior Kim Carroll's goal against UC San Diego moved her into a tie for fifth place on the program's all-time list.  Her 15 career goals match Lesa Lewis.  Next up is Gabby Ahmadia, in fourth place, with 16. … Keeper Jennie Paugh is 1-2-0 while playing just over 231 minutes.  She has made eight saves on the 12 shots that have been on frame and her goals against average (gaa) is 1.55.

Opponents Notes
Last week the Chico State Wildcats (3-3-0, 2-2-0 CCAA – T2nd place North Division) split a pair of home matches, a 1-0 loss to Cal Poly Pomona and a 2-1 win over Cal State San Bernardino.  Lisa Webster (3 g, 1 a, 7 pts) leads the Wildcat's offense.  Denni Jo Berger (1 g, 2 a, 4 pts, 1 gwg) also contributes.  Sydney Oliver, the Chico State keeper, has played all but one of the Wildcats games and has made 13 saves on 19 shots for a gaa of 1.11. Chico State is led by 10th year head coach Kim Sutton.  Her record in Chico is 96-61-5. … Cal State Stanislaus (5-1-0, 3-1-0 CCAA – 1st place North Division) fell to Cal State San Bernardino 2-3 last Friday, but came back on Sunday for a 2-1 win over Cal Poly Pomona.  Reigning Wilson/CCAA Player of the Week Karenee Demery (9 g, 2 a, 20 pts) tops the Warriors attack.  Millie Brown has seen the majority of time in goal.  She has made 14 saves on 19 shots.  Her gaa is 0.96 and she has a 4-1-0 record.  Gabriel Bolton, in his sixth season, leads the Wildcats.  His CSUS record is 51-44-10.
