Jacks hope home will lead to more offense and wins

ARCATA – Managing nine shots in two road matches, the Humboldt State women's soccer team (1-7-0, 1-5-0 CCAA) returns to Redwood Bowl this week seeking to right its ship and get back in the win column.  On Friday the Gators of San Francisco State will be in town with a 4:30 p.m. kickoff scheduled.  Then on Sunday, the Cal State Monterey Bay Otters faces off against the Jacks with 11:30 a.m. as the start time.

The Jacks closed their first California Collegiate Athletic Association road trip last Sunday with a 0-1 loss at Cal State Stanislaus.  Two days earlier it was the same result, a 0-1 loss, at Chico State.

Head-to-Head

Humboldt State's record against San Francisco State is 9-7-3.   Last year the teams split the season series with each side taking 1-0 overtime victory on its home field.  HSU is 6-1-2 all-time against the Gators in Arcata, including 3-0-1 as members of the CCAA.  The Jacks only home loss to SFSU was a 0-1 result in 1995. … Cal State East Bay has beaten Humboldt State just once in eight total meetings.  Last year HSU won 2-1 in Redwood Bowl and the teams played to a 0-0 tie in Seaside.  The lone Otter win came 2008, a 2-0 result, on their home field.

Johnson's Comments

“We gave up one goal each a game last weekend. (Keeper) Jennie (Paugh) and our defense are keeping us in games.  She has been exposed on a few occasions, but I feel good about her and the back line's play.  Jennie has stepped in and, without being tested last year, is making the majority of the saves.   We are not giving up a lot of great opportunities.  It is a combination of the back line and Jennie.” … “In both games last week, but especially against (Cal State) Stanislaus, we had a lot more dangerous opportunities at goal than our opponents.  Against Chico was had a couple of point blank chances, but we have to put those balls on frame and force the other keeper to make the save.  We haven't been doing that in games.   We work on it all week, but come game time it's not there. In both games we could have had early leads, could have tied the match or could have taken the lead with the dangerous opportunities we had. It is frustrating.” … “The opportunity is there this week, as it is every week, to get wins.  Just like us these teams (San Francisco State and Cal State Monterey Bay) are not performing.  If we put forth the same effort we did in the UC San Diego game, each and every time we take the field, we will be successful more times than not.  But right now I don't see the burning desire to win and leave it all out on the field so I'm not sure what to expect.”

Lumberjack Notes

HSU is 1-7-0 overall and 1-5-0 in CCAA play  - T4th place in the North Division. … Senior Arielle Kern and junior Sarah Nakamoto lead the Jacks attack with one goal and one assists each. Senior Kim Carroll's goal against UC San Diego (9/17) moved her into a tie for fifth place on the program's all-time list.  Her 15 career goals match Lesa Lewis.  Next up is Gabby Ahmadia, in fourth place, with 16. … Keeper Jennie Paugh is 1-4-0 while playing just shy of 412 minutes.  She has made 13 saves on the 19 shots that have been on frame and her goals against average (gaa) is 1.31. … HSU has been shutout in six of its eight games this season and have scored more than one goal in a match once (2-1 win vs. No. 25 UC San Diego).
