Pioneers drop Jacks in three sets

ARCATA – Cal State East Bay proved to be too much to handle for Humboldt State as the Jacks fell in three sets Saturday night (25-19, 25-17, 25-15). The Pioneers kept HSU from reaching the 20-point mark on all three sets of the California Collegiate Athletic Association match.

With the defeat, Humboldt State falls to 7-13 overall, 4-12 in CCAA action. Cal State East Bay—who beat the Jacks 3-1 earlier in the season—improve to 12-8 overall, 7-8 in conference.

Oceana Matsubu contributed to 11 of the Jacks' 25 kills, but Humboldt State could not seem to get in a rhythm offensively. The Pioneers, on the other hand, had almost double the Jacks' kills (46), led by Kitona Offord and Nikki Long who both had 10 kills a piece.

Humboldt State found itself trailing 16-8 in the first set and rallied from behind to drop the lead to just one point at 16-15. Cal State East Bay was not going to let the Jacks steal the lead from them and powered through to overtake HSU 25-19, finishing the set with two kills by Long and a service ace by Tatum Bales.

The Jacks looked to regroup in the second set, once again coming from behind 16-11. Two attack errors from the Pioneers, a service ace from Bailey Kotas and a kill by Merry Ellen Ackema brought HSU within one once again at 16-15. CSUEB only allowed Humboldt State to get two more points—both off kills from Matsubu—as they claimed the second set 25-17.

It'd be a short night for the Jacks as they dropped the last set 25-15. HSU could not find its rhythm offensively, only getting seven kills in the set. The Pioneers brought out their best serving, snagging four of their eight service aces in the last set.

Humboldt State will be on the road for the next two weekends before the Jacks finish the season back at home on November 11 and 12.
