Two late penalty kicks lift Coyotes over Jacks

Box Score SAN BERNARDINO – Two penalty kicks in the last ten minutes of play stunned Humboldt State as the Jacks fell 2-1 to Cal State San Bernardino Sunday afternoon. The Jacks had to play in unfamiliar heat, but rose to the occasion, unfortunately not coming away with the win.

The loss drops the Jacks to 2-11-2 overall, 1-11-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. The win puts the Coyotes at 9-5-2 overall, 7-5-2 in CCAA action.

"I was really proud of the girls for digging deep today," said head coach C.J. Johnson. "It took us a while to get going, but finally they started clicking and got some opportunities. It was a tough game, but I was really proud of how we played. We played well enough to win so it was unfortunate to lose on two penalty kicks."

Both teams had early chances to give their side a 1-0 lead, but shots from Jani Carmona and Tamra James just missed, hitting the post instead.

After a scoreless first half, the Jacks came out strong in the second half, getting a shot off in the first 30 seconds by Lizzie Mitchell.

Liz Christensen took advantage of a scoring opportunity in the 50th minute off an assist from James to give the Jacks a 1-0 lead.

"We wanted it more and played really well," said Johnson. "It was a great finish."

The momentum changed in 80th minute when a Jack player took down a Coyote in the box, resulting in a penalty kick for CSUSB. Carmona slotted the ball past goalkeeper Amber Woolcock to tie the game at 1-1.

Just five minutes later, the referee awarded the Coyotes another penalty kick off a questionable hand ball, which Carmona tucked away for her second goal of the match to give Cal State San Bernardino a one-point advantage with just five minutes left to play.

"It was a hard game to know what a foul was because it kept changing," said Johnson. "It was really discouraging because it was with five minutes to go in the game."

Humboldt State could not find the equalizer, leaving the score at 2-1 after 90 minutes. Although being out shot 14-7, the Jacks bounced back to put together a solid game after a disappointing 5-0 loss Friday night.

"I think the difference was losing Karen Pontoni to a head injury," said Johnson. "She was having a great game dominating the head game and shutting down Carmona. That really killed us losing her. It's hard to lose the best player on the field."

The Jacks also had to play without Bre Taylor after she got an early yellow card. Johnson thought the referee was on her case and figured it be better to play it safe than go a player down due to an unfortunate red card.

"We were hesitant to keep her in the game," said Johnson. "I wanted her on the field, but it wasn't happening."

The Jacks return home for a three-game homestand next week, looking to end the season on high note. HSU faces Dominican in a non-conference game on Tuesday at 11 a.m.
