Jacks open fire in 1-0 win over Penguins

Box Score
ARCATA – Despite out-shooting Dominican University of California 39-to-7, Humboldt State could only come away with a 1-0 overtime victory Tuesday afternoon in the non-conference matchup. The Jacks played 99 minutes before finally putting the ball in the back of the net to end the game in the first overtime period.

HSU improves to 5-11-0 overall, while Dominican drops to 2-12-0 overall in the Far West Region game. It was the third game the Jacks had played in just five days—with only a day's recover from the longest road trip of the season for HSU—and the team still has two more to play for a total of five games in 10 days.

"It was an important regional game for us," said head coach C.J. Johnson. "It gives our young team confidence heading into a big weekend against Chico State and Cal State Stanislaus."

The Jacks started the attack early, getting four shots off in the first 15 minutes, but didn't get a good look at a goal until the 29th minute when Zach Hammond's shot looked like it was curving perfectly into the upper right corner of the goal, only to have it hit the crossbar.

Still scoreless heading into halftime, the Jacks were determined to come out in the second half to put a goal or two up on the scoreboard. HSU outshot the Penguins 19-to-3 in the second half, led by Hammond—who had a season-high 11 shots.

"I'm very pleased with our play in the second half and overtime," said Johnson. "I felt Dominican had more dangerous opportunities in the first half. I thought our midfield group (Eric Baumgardner, Dan Mariani and Sam Wahl) owned the game in the second half for us."

In a span of six minutes in the second half, five different HSU players fired off shots at Anderson, but the goalkeeper and defense put up a solid wall to keep the Jacks out. The Penguins thought they had a break in the 63rd minute when David Mendez's shot was cleared off the Jacks' goal line by Peter Darquea.

"I felt all four forwards—Brian Holmes, Ray Lind, Hammond and Braxton Griffin—were a handfull for Dominican and played very well," said Johnson. "I thought Darquea had an outstanding day as well."

As the clock was counting down, Humboldt State continued to push offensively and had five shots in the last five minutes but could still not finish the chances, forcing the game into extra time.

The Jacks looked like they had tired legs as the minutes trickled down in the first overtime period. It looked like the game would be heading into double overtime when Hammond finally put the game out of its misery. In the 99th minute, Ben Beilin passed a ball up to Baumgardner who laid it perfectly to a running Hammond to slip it past Anderson.

"It was one of those games that even with 39 shots, I just didn't know if we were going to get one," said Johnson. "I thought we deserved one, though, but their goalkeeper certainly came up huge on a number of saves. Their back four also saved a number of opportunities, but I'm definitely pleased we kept pushing forward and attacking and good things came from it."

Kyle Verle made one key save to grab his fourth shutout of the season.
