Jacks clip Penguins' wings in 1-0 victory

Box Score
ARCATA – For the second game in a row, Liz Christensen and Tamra James connected to put Humboldt State up 1-0 in the second half. Unlike Sunday's game, however, the Jacks were able to keep their opponent scoreless to come away with the victory as HSU beat Dominican University of California 1-0 Tuesday morning in a non-conference match.

With the win, the Jacks improve to 3-11-2 overall, while the Penguins drop to 3-10-1 on the season overall.

"We were certainly concerned about how the team was going to respond after a long road trip and the heat we faced on Sunday," said head coach C.J. Johnson. "At times, we had great possession and we defended well, but I thought we lost that at one point. The flow of the game wasn't there for either team then."

After losing their 1-0 lead to two penalty kicks just two days ago, the Jacks did not have much time to recover and were playing on heavy legs in their third game in just five days. Humboldt State was also without starting centerback Karen Pontoni due to a head injury.

"I felt Allie Swanson did a great job replacing Karen," said Johnson. "Although the midfielders (Bre Taylor, Chelsea LaRue and Talya Crosby) looked like they didn't have much legs, I was pleased they were able to go 90 minutes without key subs like Terri Tigert and Aliya McCarthy."

James started the Humboldt State offense, getting a shot off in the first five minutes to challenge goalkeeper Megan Herring. Ten minutes later James fired another shot at Herring, but Herring was there once again to make the save.

The Jacks looked like they were going to go up 1-0 in the 16th minute, but an offside call overturned the goal.

Dominican outshot the Jacks in the first half 7-to-4, but could not get many dangerous opportunities off. Amber Woolcock made a key breakaway save in the 43rd minute to prevent the Penguins from going up 1-0 before halftime.

HSU came into the second half determined to grab a victory. The Jacks outshot the Penguins 9-to-4, hitting five shots off in the first 10 minutes of the half.

The Penguins had a couple chances, but Woolcock kept the ball from finding the back of the net for her second shutout of the season with seven saves.

Christensen scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season in the 70th minute off a layoff from James to put the Jacks up 1-0 with still a lot of time left to play. HSU had been in this situation many times before and lost its lead, but the Jacks were determined to not let that happen.

"I was really pleased with how physical we played in the last 10 minutes," said Johnson. "Everyone noticed bodies all over the field. We weren't going to allow a goal and that mentality paid off offensively for us in the 1-0 victory."
