ARCATA –
Zach Hammond gave the Lumberjacks an early first-half lead, but the Toros rallied from behind to defeat Humboldt State 2-1 Friday afternoon.
BOX SCORE
The loss drops the Lumberjacks to 2-8, 2-7 in California Collegiate Athletic Association action, while Cal State Dominguez Hills improves to 8-2-1, 6-2-1 CCAA. HSU will be back in action Sunday as it faces Cal State L.A. at College Creek Field with a kick off time of 2 p.m.
"It was another great game to be a part of," said head coach C.J. Johnson. "I think our improvement in the last month has been outstanding. People are starting to get comfortable in their positions."
Braxton Griffin started the Lumberjack offense in the seventh minute, testing goalkeeper Markus Dickerson. The Jacks continued to put pressure on the Toro defense, outshooting the Toros 10-6 in the first half.
Hammond would be the first to put a shot in the back of the net after he collected a long throw from
Michael Powell, dribbled through the CSUDH defense, and slipped the ball past Dickerson in the 36th minute.
"It was a great goal by Zach, beating pretty much everyone on their team," said Johnson. "He had an opportunity to put us up 2-0, but unfortunately the ball took an awkward bounce."
Dimitri Aurelus found the equalizer for the Toros in the 56th minute off a pass from Carlos Garcia, finding the back of the net behind goalkeeper
Kyle Verle.
Verle tipped Miguel Vasquez's shot in the 65th minute, but couldn't put it out of play and Jordan Rover capitalized on the rebound to give the Toros the go-ahead—and eventual game-winning—goal.
"Certainly proud of the boys," said Johnson. "We didn't roll over at all, we kept fighting. We're probably playing the best soccer we've played in years."
