Gators shut out Jacks in 3-0 defeat

Box Score SAN FRANCISCO – Despite only being out-shot 10-8, Humboldt State could not put their scoring chances away and lost 3-0 to San Francisco State Friday afternoon.

HSU drops to 1-3-2 overall, 0-3-2 in California Collegiate Athletic Association. The Gators improve to 5-1-1 on the season, 3-1-1 in conference play, with the victory. The Jacks continue to look for their first CCAA win as they travel further south to Cal Poly Pomona to take on the Mustangs at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday.

“First five minutes was outstanding—we possessed the ball, we were creative, we had lot of excitement and great play,” said head coach C.J. Johnson.

San Francisco State ended those five minutes when Nicole Vanni slipped the ball past Jennie Paugh to give the Gators a 1-0 lead. Humboldt State's outside back missed clearing the ball, giving Chloe Harrington the chance to assist Vanni's fifth goal of the season.

"Once we gave that goal up, our team just lost its confidence and the next 60 mins of play we just never possessed the ball," said Johnson. "We played too direct and really didn't get dangerous until last 20 mins."

Meanwhile, the Gators slipped two more goals past the Lumberjacks to put the final score at 3-0. Justine Hernandez headed a cross into the back of the net in the 65th minute and Vanni scored her second goal of the game in the 76th minute.

"So far this season a lot of goals we've given up have been mistakes by our own team," said Johnson. "If we can start limiting these unfortunate mistakes, it's going to put us in a better position to play full 90 minutes. It comes with experience and I know we'll fight our way through that and get better, so I'm looking forward to when we can be at that point."

Johnson and his staff made some adjustments, putting in Colette Behen and Maddi Null, as well as putting Bre Taylor and Carly Kolpin to outside backs to spark the offense from the back, but the Jacks could not get past the SFSU defense.

"We're not being dangerous enough in offensive third," said Johnson. "Overall were not getting enough numbers in the box and at times we're on top of each other, not giving each other space. Our speed of play also has to get better. Our forwards need to get aggressive and go at players."

The Jacks had chances in the last minute to get a goal on the scoreboard, including two shots from Karen Pontoni, but didn't find the net, ending the game with the 3-0 defeat.

"I'm looking forward to when it clicks and gels," said Johnson. "I know its coming, we just need to have confidence, which is kind of missing right now."
