Coyote Notes
Cal State San Bernardino comes off a dramatic double overtime 1-0 upset over the then-ranked No. 5 team in the country, UC San Diego. Jani Carmona-Urbano scored the game-winner, bringing her season total to six goals with three assists to lead the team with 15 points. The Coyotes have outshot their opponents just barely, 137-to-131, with an even 53-to-53 shots on goal ratio, but have been more successful finding the back of the net. CSUSB has netted 12 goals, most of which have come in the second half, while limiting its opponents to seven goals—a majority coming in the first 45 minutes of play. Goalkeepers Priscilla Collings and Chelsey Jones have tended the net for the Coyotes, boasting 0.57 and 0.72 goals against averages, respectively.
Triton Notes
No. 17-ranked UC San Diego enters this weekend's games after a winless showing last week. The Tritons tied 1-1 with Cal State Dominguez Hills before falling 0-1 in double overtime to CSUSB. Like the Coyotes, UCSD has scored a majority of its 20 goals in the second half (12). The Tritons average 15.0 shots per game, outshoot their opponents 135-to-87 and boast a .496 shots on goal percentage. Cassie Callahan leads the team with six goals, three of which are game-winners, and has two assists. Gabi Hernandez, who boasts a .455 shot percentage, follows closely behind with five goals, including one game-winner. Freshman goalkeeper Kelcie Brodsky has picked up four shutouts, while giving up five goals to give her a 0.53 goals against average.
Lumberjack Notes
After scoring first in three of its first four games, Humboldt State was shut out over the weekend and could only fire off two shots against No. 8-ranked Cal State Stanislaus. The Jacks have been out-shot by their opponents 102-to-70, but have already netted half of the goals the team ended with last season.
Maddi Null leads the team with two goals, while
Colette Behen,
Lizzie Mitchell and
Carly Kolpin follow right behind with a goal and an assist each. Kolpin boasts an impressive .727 shot on goal percentage, giving eight of her 11 shots a dangerous chance of finding the back of the net.
Johnson Says
"This past weekend we certainly learned of some areas where we've been exposed in. We went into the weekend knowing it was going to be a challenge though. We had some concerns about injuries and the heat there. ... Looking back at the weekend as a whole, we played against two nationally-ranked, quality programs. Just the fact that we are a young team, we knew it would be a challenge. I think it's important for us, however, as we build the program and move forward, you need those games. Our players need that exposure against quality teams to know what it's going to take to be competitive. ... We need to get back to playing our style of soccer. This past weekend, unfortunately, we just didn't have the horses. We didn't play well or connect with each other. Just getting back to playing our possession game and attacking out of the back, if we can get back to that, we're going to give ourselves opportunities, like we did previously. ... It doesn't get any easier. We're playing against UCSD, who was just fifth in the country and did drop a game, but of course we're also playing the team who beat them, CSUSB. It's definitely going to be a challenge, but I'd rather have it that way."
