#12 Sonoma State strong finishes help to overtake HSU

Box Score ROHNERT PARK – For the third time in the last five matches, Humboldt State volleyball faced a nationally-ranked opponent.  Unfortunately the end result was the same as the previous two rated foe contests.

On Saturday night, 12th-ranked Sonoma State claimed HSU as its latest victim on the court in a 3-0 sweep.

The Seawolves (15-2/8-1 California Collegiate Athletic Association) finished the opening set with a 5-1 spurt and 25-17 score, before rattling off eight of the final 10 points of set number two for a 25-16 ending.

The Lumberjacks (8-8/3-6 CCAA) held a lead until midway into the third set of 10-5.

Sonoma State, though, answered with seven points in a row to edge in front, 12-10.  Tied at 18 later in the set, the home squad put three points in a row on the scoreboard and rode it to a 25-21 third victory.

"Tonight we played hard, but struggled in serve receive and made too many unforced errors offensively against a team that makes very few mistakes," explained HSU head coach Kelly Wood.  "We struggled to make adjustments on defense and we were unable to stop some of the Sonoma attackers as a result."

Ashley Owen lined 13 kills and had an assist to pace the HSU frontline attack.

Kaitlyn Dunaway was the lone other double figure kill producer with 10 to go with 10 digs, a block assist and an ace.

Symone Hayden added six kills and six digs.  Courtney Debrunner and Alex Hasenstab combined for five kills, two digs and two block assists.

Sam Siebert finished with 30 assists, 10 digs, a kill and a block assist.

Colleen Noonan contributed 10 digs and one assist, while Kelci Renshaw dug nine balls, laced two aces and had one assist.  Erin Mitchell chipped in an ace and an assist.

A Dunaway ace capped four points in a row to pull HSU as close as it was able to get at 15-14 in the first set, before Sonoma State scored 10 of the next 13 tallies.

Hayden killed a ball to make it a one-point deficit, 12-11, of the second set for as close as the visitors could muster.

HSU will come back to Arcata for a pair of contests next week with Cal State Stanislaus on Thursday night and Chico State for a Saturday night bout with both starting at 7 p.m.
